My Win 11 PC won't wake up from sleep using the keyboard or mouse.

My Win 11 PC can only wake up by pressing the power button. How do make it able to wake up using the keyboard or mouse?

I have checked the option that says "Enable wake up using mouse or keyboard" somewhere, but it doesn't make any difference.

My PC is updated to the latest system update.

I believe I found the solution, it is a Windows power-saving policy where USB power is cut off when the computer goes into sleep mode, so the keyboard receiver will not work, and the computer will not wake up as a result. You just need to disable this feature.

Settings > Energy e Battery > Energy Recommendations > Stop usb devices when my screen is off to save battery ----> Turn Off.

I built the computer using the MSI PRO Z790-P WIFI DDR4 motherboard. When none of the suggestions in this thread worked I started poking around in the BIOS as I had seen some advanced power management options while setting up the computer.

Go to (or try to find an equivalent):

Settings->Advanced->Wake Up Event Setup->Wake Up Event By: set this option to 'BIOS' (I tried using the 'OS' option, but it didn't seem to work)

Settings->Advanced->Wake Up Event Setup->Resume By USB Device: set this option to 'Enabled' (This will automatically enable the Settings->Advanced->Power Management Setup->USB Standby Power At S4/S5)

    THIS!

My MOBO is also MSI but another model, yet this fixed the issue!
That BIOS section also had options to enable or disable Mouse and Keyboard waking up the system.

Definitely something MSI should look into and have these options set properly by default.

I had the same problem with the same model motherboard - the MSI PRO Z790-P WIFI. Changing these wake up settings in the BIOS fixed the problem. Specifically, I enabled:

    • Resume by USB device
    • Resume from S3/S4/S5 by PS/2 mouse
    • Resume from S3/S4/S5 by PS/2 keyboard

These were in Settings > Advanced > Wake Up Event Setup. Your BIOS might be different.

None of the other answers or responses here resolved my issue. You may not even need to have an MSI board, but do check the BIOS on your board before mucking around with registry keys, the non-existent Win 11 (Home ed) power troubleshooter, or Device Manager settings.

Thanks for posting about this issue! Problem solved!

Under the sleep area on advanced power settings is a section titled “allow wake timers” on battery or plugged in. Both were “disabled”. I’ve “enabled” both. When hovering mouse over the “enable” selection a pop up appears that says “Allow windows to wake up from sleep on timed events”. Maybe this is the magic bullet.

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately my advanced pop up doesn’t have “hibernate” selection under the sleep section. There is a ‘hard disc’ section to turn off hard disc after x number of minutes. I am not sure if turning off the hard disc is considered hibernation. I moved turn off hard djsc to ‘never’ when plugged in.

This is because your laptop actually went into HIBERNATE mode instead of SLEEP mode.

In this case, it is almost like in powered off status, and therefore all keyboards regardless whether it is built in or external usb keyboard are disabled. Only key that works is POWER button, normally located at the top corner of the built in keyboard.

To prevent this from happening, you need to change HIBERNATE timer to "0". It's ok to set your laptop to go into sleep mode as quickly as you want to save energy, but do not make it go into hibernate mode if you use your laptop on a regular basis.

[Control Panel] ->[Power Options] -> Choose a power plan (usually recommended to choose the one that is associated with your manufacture's plan) -> [ Change setting plan] -> set Display off time, and Sleep time and click on "advanced power settings" ->

You will see a new Popup window called "advanced settings", then select SLEEP option and expand it -> You will see "Hibernate After" setting, you need to put 0 instead of minutes.
