How do I stop renamed files from moving to upper left corner

A few months ago I switched to a new laptop, then immediately downloaded windows upgrade on it, so I don't know which factor causes this. But ever since, every time I rename a file on the desktop, windows immediately moves the file to the upper left corner of the screen, or the nearest open space to this point. This is confusing when I'm trying to keep track of and arrange my desktop files in some other way, and I have to keep moving the file back to where I want it.

    I just did some quick testing...

    Set Windows to ONLY show on display 1 (total display size: 1920x1080).

    Copied a file onto the desktop, and renamed it. IT STAYED IN POSITION!

    Set Windows to ONLY show on display 2 (total display size: 1920x1080).

    Renamed the file again. IT STAYED IN POSITION!

    Set Windows to show on BOTH displays (extended) (total display size: 3840x1080).

    Renamed the file again. IT STAYED IN POSITION!

    Restart the PC.

    Rename the file again. IT STAYED IN POSITION!

    For some ODD reason, that seems to fix my issue, FOR NOW(!)

    Great stuff. I am guessing you have two monitors on all the time? I only use my external 4k monitor. My laptop lid always stays shut. I wonder if your fix works with just one monitor on.

    I always use 2 monitors, yes.

    To me, it looks like it's an issue triggered by a total display width of more than 1920 (don't know the exact number).

    Maybe you can "fix" it by using a lower resolution while renaming a file on the desktop and then revert to full resolution. Just a guess ;)

    Hi, I figured it out and maybe you all did already by now.

    The solution is simple:

    1. Right click on screen: Allow auto Rearrange of Icons.
      All Folders and files will move left of screen.
    2. Right click on screen: Unclick Allow auto Rearrange of Icons.
      Now rearrange all folders and files to desired positions on screen
    3. Rename folders and they remain in the same place on screen

    Voila!

    This worked for me. However, a day later, it reverted to throwing renamed shortcuts into the top left corner. If yours works fine, then you must have a different setup. I doubt there'll ever be a fix for this. The desktop is one of the most essential parts of any operating system. If you don't have control over that, then that's a massive failure for Microsoft.
