Why does my snipping tool no longer bring up the pop up image to edit?

For anyone still experiencing this, I appear to have resolved it (for now at least, I haven't rebooted yet). Open the Snipping Tool from the Windows screen icon (i.e. not Windows key-Shift-S). Then click on the 3 dots at top right (when you mouse over, it says See More). Click on Settings. In my list the second option Automatically save screenshots was set to ON. Change the setting to OFF. Now when I use the Windows key-Shift-S, the screen grab remains on screen and allows me to edit it.

Those auto-saved screenshots were being stored in (in my case) the One Drive-->Pictures-->Screenshots folder which I can now cleanup as I wasn't aware they were being saved somewhere, since MS didn't tell us about the change of behaviour.

PS I tried to submit a screenshot of the settings menu but it failed to update !!!

For me what worked may have been mentioned, but the priority of notifications was the issue in System > Notifications > Snipping Tool.
To fix it I made it the top priority so now it always appears on top. Still buggy and had a terrible UX from MS, but no surprise there, the entire Win 11 took us 2 steps backward because they don't hire UX people.

This is what worked for me:

1. Open Snipping Tool normally via the start menu to get the UI up
2. Click the three dots in the top left and click Settings
3. Disable "Automatically save screenshots"

Caveat that this is in/after updating to Windows 11 for me so I don't know if this is option is in Windows 10, but I didn't even know it was a thing until I ran out of ideas and went digging. After disabling the auto save the popup started appearing for me again (I also went to check my pictures folder and sure enough there were the countless tests screen grabs I'd made!).

Apologies for no screenshots (ironic), the form keeps saying its failed if I try to upload an image.

I just don't see the three dots in the upper left on any screen with the snip it tool.

I also don't see "Automatically save screenshots".

But I do appreciate all the responses. One day, I will find what I'm looking for or just accept and enjoy what I have.

I had a problem where the snipping tool would open, let me take the snip, but then no longer showed me the pop-up allowing me to highlight / edit / crop it.

I fixed it as follows:

• Start > All Apps > Scroll down to snipping tool
• right-click on snipping tool > More > App Settings
• click on "set Default apps"
• scroll down to Snipping Tool and click on it
• scroll down to the section that says "MS-SCREENSKETCH" and click on it
• select the option that says snipping tool and that has the snipping tool icon
• click "Set Default"
• close window
• restart snipping tool

Now whenever I take a snip the window to edit, highlight, crop is available by clicking the snip icon on the task bar.

OMGGGGG Thank you this worked I am going to tag this in another post.

When I first did it nothing worked, my mistake was that I had snippet open while doing the steps then closed it.

The second time I tried it I add in clicking on the terminate option in snippet then followed the next step of:

scroll down to the section that says "MS-SCREENSKETCH" and click on it

etc.

I am on Windows 11 with latest updates and everything was fine until recently. Now it still works but not as before. tks for your response
