Why does my snipping tool no longer bring up the pop up image to edit?

Stop press! My Windows 11 laptop has just updated itself to Build 22631.3672 and, wouldn't you know it, the original problem I posted here some months back has returned!
Namely, after right-clicking the taskbar shortcut and clicking "Take a new snip", the editor window didn't appear automatically. Instead the notification appears which I then had to click to make the editor window appear.

I was indebted to Jasell's post (page 12 of this forum) of October 28, 2023 which suggested the default app for "MS-SCREENCLIP" (in Default Apps, go to "Screen Snipping") needed to be set to "Screen Snipping" rather than "Snipping Tool" for some reason that is beyond me.

I've just done this again to get the behaviour back to the way I want it and as it always was in Windows 10 Snip & Sketch. The Snipping Tool by the way has also updated to version11.2404.40.0.

These instructions worked for me. It also worked to turn off "Automatically save screenshots" in the Snipping Tool Settings.

I experimented just now and turned on "Automatically save screenshots" but didn't get the same behaviour as you did. After using Windows key + Shift + "S", the notification popped up in the bottom-right hand corner as before. And a right-click on the taskbar shortcut and "Take a new screenshot", gives me the editor window (previous notes in this forum discuss this if it doesn't appear automatically) without a notification - again, the same as before. So I saw no user interface changes.

Of course, we may have slightly different versions of software: The Snipping Tool is at version11.2403.8.0 while Windows 11 is at 23H2, Build 22631.3527.

I have often been annoyed that the keyboard method, Windows Key + Shift + "S", doesn't automatically invoke the editor or that there isn't an option to do so. Instead it creates the notification banner which, if clicked, will then invoke the editor. Otherwise it sits in the copy buffer to be pasted later.

I've now changed my mind. The other day, I wanted to take a quick screenshot of part of the display and used the keyboard method. I then ignored the notification and carried on, knowing the screenshot was in the buffer. Thus the flow of whatever I was doing was minimally interrupted. Perhaps this was in the minds of the developers.

And, in fact, if the Windows clipboard history is enabled (which I generally find very useful for copying sections of text), up to 25 screenshots could be accumulated in the buffer to be pasted somewhere later.

Yes, the option to automatically save screenshots to the Screenshots folder could be enabled but I prefer to not have a build up of files on the disk that I may forget about. And, of course, the Windows key + Print Screen combination causes almost no interruption at all and will save in the same way if full screenshots are acceptable.
