Second monitor keeps on temporarily going black at random

I am working off of a laptop and have a second monitor to extend my displays. I have been using this set up for two years now and have not had a problem until last night. It seems that my attached monitor only (main monitor on laptop is not affected) will go black for a few seconds before turning back on and showing my screen. It should be noted that my laptop does not reset the display to place the windows back onto the main screen when this happens but the extended monitor goes black at random. Note that I am running Windows 10 and unable to upgrade to Windows 11 as of now.

So far, I have tried the following solutions but still cannot figure this out.

  1. Bought brand new chords (HDMI + Adapter)
  2. Bought a brand new second monitor (issues happening with both old and new monitor)
  3. Checked for updates on all drivers
  4. Reinstalled both graphics drivers
  5. Rolled back graphics drivers
  6. Checked basic settings (sleep/power/screen saver settings)
  7. Disabled all services in background apps in "System Configuration"
  8. Restarted Windows explorer

This means I have spent time replacing and even buying new equipment to get around this issue but cannot seem to figure it out! This is very important since I work at home as well. Please let me know if there is anything else I can possibly do outside of hard resetting the computer (which I cannot do for a few reasons). Thank you!

    I'm having a similar issue.

    Yesterday I upgraded my TV to a Samsung 75" Q60C 4K.

    I've got an Intel NUC attached to a receiver/amplifier which is then in turn connected to the TV. When I'm using the NUC, the screen randomly goes black for a second.

    The screen only does it for the NUC and only when through the receiver. My PS5, also connected to the receiver does not have an issue and when I swap the HDMI cables each device works the same as before the swap. If I connect the NUC directly to an HDMI port on the TV it works without issue. I'm completely stumped and really don't want to have to stop using my NUC through the receiver.

    A friend suggested something called the extended black function, but I haven't been able to find anything...

    I tried the refresh rate idea and no joy...

    Glad you fixed it. Sadly, since I posted that message I switched to using DP cables and I still have the problem. It also continues to happen most often when I plug an appliance into a socket in the same area.

    I'm actually beginning to wonder whether it's a power-related HDMI/HDCP issue. AFAIK I have only had this problem with monitors connected via HDMI (not DisplayPort). Has anyone had the problem with a monitor connected via DP?

    My theory is: a temporary fluctuation in the power supply may prompt the HDCP "handshake" (between the display adapter and the monitor) to be repeated, causing the display to go blank until the handshake is completed. This usually takes a few seconds. I used to have a Humax PVR which did something similar - my TV would go blank for a few seconds while the HDCP handshake repeated itself.

    i changed to a high quality HDMI cable, and the problem went away... thanks for prompting this...

    Yes, I've had this happen with a monitor connected by display port. I have 3 monitors, 1 connected by display port & 2 connected by HDMI. This issue occurs on all 3 monitors at random. Some days it happens more than others. My laptop is work issued and replaced an older Window laptop in Feb 2024. I never had this issue using the old laptop and the same monitors, cables, surge protector, etc. The only change was the old HP laptop with Windows 10 Enterprise & HP docking station to an new HP with Windows 10 Enterprise & new HP docking station.

    I can confirm that I have done all of those 7 things since the problem first started occurring last year, and I still have the problem.
