Second monitor keeps on temporarily going black at random

I am working off of a laptop and have a second monitor to extend my displays. I have been using this set up for two years now and have not had a problem until last night. It seems that my attached monitor only (main monitor on laptop is not affected) will go black for a few seconds before turning back on and showing my screen. It should be noted that my laptop does not reset the display to place the windows back onto the main screen when this happens but the extended monitor goes black at random. Note that I am running Windows 10 and unable to upgrade to Windows 11 as of now.

So far, I have tried the following solutions but still cannot figure this out.

  1. Bought brand new chords (HDMI + Adapter)
  2. Bought a brand new second monitor (issues happening with both old and new monitor)
  3. Checked for updates on all drivers
  4. Reinstalled both graphics drivers
  5. Rolled back graphics drivers
  6. Checked basic settings (sleep/power/screen saver settings)
  7. Disabled all services in background apps in "System Configuration"
  8. Restarted Windows explorer

This means I have spent time replacing and even buying new equipment to get around this issue but cannot seem to figure it out! This is very important since I work at home as well. Please let me know if there is anything else I can possibly do outside of hard resetting the computer (which I cannot do for a few reasons). Thank you!

    I have a problem, I searched a lot but I couldn't find it. This is my last resort. My second screen works but is black. When I change the resolution, it opens for a moment but closes immediately. The mouse goes to the second screen, but there is only a black screen. The refresh rate is also ideally at 60hz. As soon as I change the resolution setting, it turns on for a moment but immediately turns black. The cable is also solid.

    Unfortunately,

    It started again for me this afternoon. It at least lasted for almost 2 days. I pulled the TP Link dongle and went back to the built in Bluetooth. So far nothing yet and I have not lost Bluetooth connections either.

    I am sure there is something going on, however I scoured all the event logs I could think of and nothing stood out as being a direct cause.

    Hello,

    I just built a brand-new system and ended up having the same problem. I scoured the internet and found several potential solutions. I tried everything I found and nothing worked. I finally figured out, almost by accident, the solutions was nowhere else that I had found.

    The cause of the problem turned out to be the Bluetooth driver for the onboard Bluetooth built into the motherboard. I found it because I was also using a Bluetooth keyboard. Every so often, the keyboard would lose its connection and there turned out to be an error message in Event Viewer that the keyboard had gone out of range. Around the same time the keyboard lost connection, one of the DisplayPort monitors would go black for a few seconds.

    I disabled the Intel Bluetooth adapter on the motherboard Intel(R) Wireless Bluetooth(R), Driver Provider: Intel, Driver Date: 1/16/2024, Driver Version: 23.30.0.3. Once it was disabled, I no longer have issues with the screen going black for 3-4 seconds randomly.

    I had a TP Link Bluetooth Dongle that I inserted and updated with TP Link drivers so I could use the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse I have.

    It has been working fine for some time now with no black screens or the keyboard losing connection.

    My system is as follows, all the latest drivers and BIOS were installed as of this response:

    OS: Windows 11 Pro 23H2

    CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-14700K 3.40 GHz

    MOBO: ASUS ROG STRIX Z790-H Gaming (WiFi 6E)

    Graphics: GIGABYTE Radeon RX 6600 EAGLE 8G Graphics Card

    Monitor: 4x Sceptre Z27 (3840x2160)

    Its comforting to know its not just me, but I have never been able to get this to work and I have a high performance laptop for creative work that really needs a second screen. Just unplugging the cable every few minutes is completely hopeless as a work around for my needs. I hope Microsoft get it fixed soon
