Microsoft Authenticator is asking me to authenticate using Microsoft Authenticator to use Microsoft Authenticator

So first of all... Why is "microsoft Authenticator" not an option in the "Products" dropdown when choosing where this post should go? I'm just going to choose "Windows"... Sorry not sorry.

Also, I can't take a screenshot on the microsoft Authenticator app without it capturing a black image (thanks,) so here is an extremely low resolution webcam picture of my phone screen.

When I click "Passwords" section on the microsoft authenticator app, I see a button that says "Sign In".

So, I click the button, to sign in. Then, it asks me to authenticate using microsoft authenticator, but I am not signed in, and this is a "sensitive" page, so I have to enter the code displayed into microsoft authenticator, BUT I AM ON MICROSOFT AUTHENTICATOR ALREADY!!! Who designed this terrible app??? Cheap labor resources then you expect us to prefer microsoft edge over Chrome? LOL

Also, when I search my own question in "Bing", it doesn't come up, even if I type the title word for word. Does it go through some sort of not-mentioned approval process before my post becomes actually visible to the public, or is Bing just extremely bad at updating its search results in a timely manner?

    Adrian,

It's your company IT responsibility to aid you with this, not Microsoft or the consumer community forums.

To be clear, you've missed at least one post in this thread from March 31st where I noted that those using Azure AD accounts, which Work or School accounts typically are, should be getting help from the Microsoft Learn - Q&A forums related to Azure and Authenticator, not here. In fact, I'd recommend all business-related account users go there instead, since even those not specifically using Azure, but only Office 365, are still typically using Work or School accounts which those aiding in the Q&A forums will be more familiar with.

Though I personally have a background with AD business environments, it's old and from before the authenticator even existed, so I'm making guesses there based on what I know about its operation in the consumer environment, which is significantly different.

Having just reviewed the entire thread and tried to use the link within the Microsoft Authenticator app article I referenced in that post, I discovered it only went to the Azure forums and not specifically authenticator, so here's a link that I used myself.

    Microsoft Authenticator - Microsoft Q&A

However, even then this should be the responsibility of the company IT Administrator or other support, not the individual user.

Depending on the type of product the company has with Microsoft, they should also typically have some form of more direct support as well, though those vary widely depending on company size. This would be a very good time for them to learn what those support options might be, since whomever those options might provide access to are likely to know far more than those in any open forums.

Don't let an admin tell you it's your responsibility to fix your problem, it's not. If they don't know the proper pathways to support for your organization it's time to learn, no matter whether they are an internal IT person or group or some form of contract support.

    Rob

Hi again Rob. I got my admin to have a look and no one in our company except him has 2FA.. yet I am still prompted to authenticate via the Authenticator app (which itself, as I've said, requires authentication to sign into).

He sent me a screenshot of a table in which each row had a tickbox, a person's name, their email address, and then the word 'Disabled' (this is the only proof I have he was looking at the right screen). Does this sound like the screen whereby 2FA is enabled / disabled for each person's account.

    Any ideas?

    Joshua,

If your account is a work or school account, then see my post immediately above yours that explains that you should contact your organization's IT admin in order to have them remove the 2-factor authentication from your account and then set it all back up again from scratch.

If you're the admin for the work or school account, then contact whatever official Microsoft Support channel you have in order to get aid if you aren't aware how to do this.

If you have a personal Microsoft account, then my earlier post on a previous page in this thread covers that process, though it's basically the same with the difference being that you remove the "Send sign-in notification" method from the "Advanced security options", "Ways to prove who you are" and then use the instructions for setting up the Microsoft authenticator for a personal account instead.

Yes it's a bit confusing, but obviously something went wrong with the initial attempt for those reading this thread, so fully uninstalling the authenticator app and resetting 2FA to start the process over again is the simplest way to fix the problem. The larger issue that exists for some is an inability to login to your account to do this at all, but that shouldn't be a problem if there's a Work or school account administrator to do this for you.

Only those with a personal account might require Microsoft's help to do this if they can't gain control using alternate set of password, email and/or text methods to verify their account.

    Rob
