I have been using NTBackup for many years. It failed to work on Windows at some point (Vista or 7?), but someone out there figured out how to get it to work. The only thing that doesn't work now is Volume Shadow Copy but that's fine. It just means that some files particularly in Windows won't be backup up as they are in use or inaccessible for some reason. NTBackup is simple, but one can select any or all files to restore, and, yes there are more modern ones that have replaced it, but it still works well for me so I keep using it. It is a file backup utility, so if files need to be in a specific area, restoring a partition may not work and in that case I use an imaging utility like Macrium or Lazesoft, but if that doesn't matter (like for data partitions only) then it works.

I am still working on the "old" laptop and seeing if I can repair it so the 0xC0000001 error goes away. But, in the meantime I have abandoned updating a clone copy of Windows 7 PRO to Windows 10 PRO because when I try to update, it asks for the product key, but since this clone is not genuine, I don't think it will let me update. I could update the original D630 but it might be too slow for Windows 10 and may not update properly.

On the "new" laptop which was cloned from the "old" laptop, I decided to reinstall Windows 10. But before I did that, I made a complete file backup (with NTBackup) of the Windows partition. After the reinstall, it was pretty much void of all my programs, settings etc. So I did a restore of all the files in the backup except the Windows directory. This turned out to be good because I managed to restore most of the program shortcut icons on the desktop from the corrupted computer by doing this backup. I think only less than a half of them worked. I spent all afternoon reinstalling software programs and I'm down to about a half a dozen left to reinstall. The disk has been running at 100% almost all afternoon. I applied a few fixes I found online, but I think that the culprit might just be Windows Update. There are a lot of missing updates and so I'm slogging through that process.

After all is said and done, this "new" laptop might just be close to what I had before the "old" laptop died.

Since you didn't get the "No physical memory..." error on the "new" E6530, I guess the BIOS chip on the old one is shot with regard to its ability to boot in Legacy mode (or to a Legacy device). At least the new one can do that. Yeah, sounds like you are right the dual boot installation is faulty. I hope your other ideas will work. Otherwise, yeah, a clean install of both OS should do it. I got my "new" E6530 machine. It had a GPT/EFI hard disk (256 GB) with just Windows 10 on it. I took that one out and put the clone of my "bad" one in it. The BIOS was at A09. I updated it to A22, but the result was the the same as my "old" E6530: BSOD Windows Boot Manager failed with error code 0xC00000001. So, some files must be corrupted on the hard disk, but no idea which ones and so far no repair tool has found and fixed them. I have tried just about everything I can find online. Since I am seemingly unable to update my original Win 7 PRO to Win 10 (because it won't accept the Win 10 product key that *should* be on the machine to do an update in place which I swear I did 2 years ago), I can try a couple more things but then I guess I have no choice but to start over.
