Microsoft Compatibility Telemetry Using High CPU

Hi, whenever I startup, I notice that Microsoft Compatibility Telemetry uses about 50-80% of my CPU which stops after a minute or so. Is this normal or should I be concerned?

The Windows Compatibility Telemetry contains technical information about how the device and its associated software work. It sends data to Microsoft on a regular basis in order to improve the system and improve the user experience. To resolve your issue about its high CPU usage, you can disable this service in the Task Scheduler by following the steps below:

  1. Click Start, type Task Scheduler, and then press Enter.
  2. On the TaskScheduler window, go to this path: Task Scheduler Library\Microsoft\Windows\Application Experience.
  3. On the Application Experience folder, look for Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser.
  4. Right-click on it, select Disable, and then confirm to complete the process.

Hey I found a fix, I just went to that file location of that "Telemetry"

In my case it was at : C:\Windows\SysWOW64

  1. Renamed "CompatTelRunner.exe" -> "Something.exe"
  2. Then Ended the task on taskmanager then it didn't start up.

Of course I am not sure if it will have any long term effects. Do it at your risk :)

    This is not only incredibly annoying, but it is also ILLEGAL.

    For a company to collect data, on its customers (or Users), new regulations stipulate that this should be an "Opt-In" choice in order to be legal, NOT Opt-Out.

    Sending telemetry to Microsoft should be Disabled BY DEFAULT, and only turned on if the User wants this.

    As a previous poster pointed out - you are theoretically given this choice when installing windows, but typical Microsoft, it completely ignores your selection.

    (Have you ever logged a Support Ticket with Microsoft? They ask for your "preferred contact method", but it doesn't matter if you choose "Email", they will simply call you on the telephone anyway!)

    Microsoft are already in trouble with international regulators over their new "Copilot Plus" PCs and that whole "take screenshots on a regular basis" travesty - but this existing telemetry reporting is just as insidious and still totally ILLEGAL.

    Unfortunately, the case is likely to be tied up in the EDPS for years to come before we get any resolution, which will probably be just a monetary fine, which they will easily cover in additional profits in the intervening period.

    I will continue to use Linux at home and wherever possible - just a shame that my company needs to use Microsoft PCs, or I would VETO them entirely!

    Be aware, I suspect MS monitors these discussions... Not to fix any defects (I've complained for 12+ years, and they blame the user, their products only get worse, and they remove useful functionality with every new version), but to find ways to PREVENT you from getting around their ****.

    I had an interview with them once, several individual meetings with people. There were two common topics at every stage:

    1. You solved this issue how? ... as he's writing done the details of what was used so it could be prevented in the future
    2. How do you handle lying to a customer?

    (These should give you insight as to what kind of company they are)

    Speaking of illegal and Linux, they released a version of Edge for MAC. And then, behind my back, without permission, with no warning or preparation, they just "auto-updated" it one day. I launch it and it announces "This app is not compatible with the version of your OS...".

    In other words, they crippled the computer that I own. And were happy to do it.

    That unit is now Ubuntu.

    Also, by the way, the newer versions of Outlook (PC and Web) regularly send your data and even credentials to MS, on the grounds they want to sync the material for a "better experience". My employer uses Outlook, so I occasionally use the web version on my personal PC, and I am always getting popups... Something like "The server is requesting to receive your clipboard contents. Yes/No". Thankfully my browser is a build with lots of protections.

    "SUCK" is not strong enough of a word to describe their behavior.
