Microsoft Compatibility Telemetry Using High CPU

Hi, whenever I startup, I notice that Microsoft Compatibility Telemetry uses about 50-80% of my CPU which stops after a minute or so. Is this normal or should I be concerned?

The Windows Compatibility Telemetry contains technical information about how the device and its associated software work. It sends data to Microsoft on a regular basis in order to improve the system and improve the user experience. To resolve your issue about its high CPU usage, you can disable this service in the Task Scheduler by following the steps below:

  1. Click Start, type Task Scheduler, and then press Enter.
  2. On the TaskScheduler window, go to this path: Task Scheduler Library\Microsoft\Windows\Application Experience.
  3. On the Application Experience folder, look for Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser.
  4. Right-click on it, select Disable, and then confirm to complete the process.

Hey I found a fix, I just went to that file location of that "Telemetry"

In my case it was at : C:\Windows\SysWOW64

  1. Renamed "CompatTelRunner.exe" -> "Something.exe"
  2. Then Ended the task on taskmanager then it didn't start up.

Of course I am not sure if it will have any long term effects. Do it at your risk :)

    Tried...

    Task Scheduler (application experience and Customer Experience) Disabled

    Group Policy (Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Data Collection and Preview Builds > Allow Telemetry) Disabled

    Services (Connected User Experience Telemetry) Disabled

    It still runs causing this

    I usually know when it's started to run as the USB Keyboard/Mouse inserted in the surface dock start disconnecting and reconnecting - as soon as that happens, I have to launch Task Manager and shut telemetry down.

    However, there is nothing I can do when it's rebooting. Gets to the login screen and freezes (or sometimes the screen is just black for about ten minutes), the processor is hot when I touch the top of the laptop - clearly, it's pushing over the 100C limit for that processor.

    Just renamed CompatTelRunner.exe to CompatTelRunner.old - I suspect that if I have to run SFC or DISM it will replace the 'corrupted' file or a Windows update might do the same, so it's probably going to be an ongoing battle.

    Until another update probably, so there will be a need to do it again. Might I suggest looking at Linux, even if it's a dual boot system so that you can do most things without using Windows. When you really need to use Windows, then you can log in and use it.

    Microsoft. C'mon! Anything that runs at startup needs to be extremely careful about CPU usage. When I log in to my PC, I'm almost guaranteed to be doing something--a real human wants to interact with their PC. I want to quickly get to work, or check my e-mail, or buy something, or play a game. I'm guaranteed to want to interact with my PC during that first minute of startup.

    So for this telemetry process to run--along side Chrome updating after I launch my browser, while my cloud storage is attempting to sync, and MS Defender has decided it has an urgent update or scan it wants to run... just schedule your telemetry at a different time!
