cumulative updates fail to install. Both KB5018410 and KB5016616 failed on installation.

My computer is a DELL Optiplex 3020. Both recent cumulative updates (KB5018410 and KB5016616) have failed on installation. The code is 0x800f0845. I have tried all the suggested things to try to get the update to go through up to an in-place update. All other updates go through with no problem. Just the cumulative updates. I have version 21H2 build 19044.1826.

    I have done that twice for both of the updates. Both had the same result. It won't install. If I leave it long enough, it goes to a black screen with just the mouse pointer on it. Thanks

    Sorry if it didn't help.

    Please try the following.

    1. Run Windows Update Troubleshooter

    Open Settings => System => Troubleshoot => Other troubleshooters =>Windows Update => Run.

    1. Use Command Prompt commands.

    => Open Command prompt as Administrator.

    => Type/copy the commands below , enter 1 by 1.

    net stop wuauserv

    net stop cryptSvc

    net stop bits

    net stop msiserver

    ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

    ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old

    net start wuauserv

    net start cryptSvc

    net start bits

    net start msiserver

    => Close the Command Prompt and restart your computer then try to update again.

    1. Use System File Checker to check and fix corrupted system files which may be the cause of the issue. Please refer to the link.

    After that try to update again.

    Have you found a solution to this issue?

    I have the same problem, after the update is installed and the computer is reboot, it get stuck on the spinning circle and I have to reboot the computer several times until gives me an error and reverts the update back

    So far, the only solution is currently to perform a clean Windows installation.
