Windows 11 reboots itself - Annoying!

I don't know if this will actually work or not, but after following the thread in this post I noticed "Settings -> Windows Update -> Advanced Options -> Notify me when a restart is required..." which was defaulted to 'off' on my very new HP machine. I've switched it to 'on' in hopes... I'm considering telling win11 that this is a metered connection as well since it supposedly won't download updates over metered connections.

I completely agree with the various points about MSFT breaking things that previously worked (fixing things not broken) and generally making a nuisance of themselves with all this auto-update-all-the-time ****. Perhaps a little more focus on important stuff and a little less on breaking stuff all the time? As others mentioned, i've lost countless hours of work due to these reboots just on this machine which was new in January.

Looking at the instructions below from Hania, the setting shown is in response to "System Failure", it seems odd to be the place to change a setting related to updates.

I'm frustrated with this auto-restart as I often have many open documents, and while the system does save and re-open these it does so under the recovery protocol which is a real pain to get back to the previous state. It should be possible to do this in a seamless way, save any open files as a temporary file, do the update and restart and re-open the file so it appears exactly as it was previously. Plus there are of course applications outside of the Windows world that don't recover at all, so there should still be easily accessible user controls that all a user to prevent an autostart.

What is wrong with Microsoft? I have a new computer Windows 11. It evidently downloaded an update without asking and just spontaneously restarted in the middle of my crossword puzzle. I shouldn't have to disable idiotic things like this in the first place. Windows 7 worked just fine in this respect. It told me when it wanted to install an update and I had control over when that happened. I wish they would quit trying to fix things that aren't broken in the first place. I shut down my computer when I am not using it, it save electricity and I don't need any of this nonsense.

This is a poor answer that doesn't account for OP's use-case: His restarts are due to Microsoft ramming their updates down our throats and forcing a restart of the system when it's not wanted.
