Is live.co.uk using POP on a mail host out of order or discontinued. It worked perfectly for years but has not worked for last 2 days. I get "Unable to send or receive messages for the Live.co.uk (username) account. Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems or a long period of inactivity. Server: 'pop3.live.com' Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC0F Protocol: POP3 Port: 995 Secure(SSL): Yes"

As per my post of October 15th:

As far as I am aware (and I'm not technical) my research indicated the problem was in the dns. I cleared the dns cache and registered the dns. This seems to have worked and I am currently able to pick up pop3.live.com in WLM. Why only my live.co.uk email was affected and not my other POP3 email accounts (gmail, btinternet & AOL) I don't know (although Don Varnau explained a bit in one of his replies), nor why this issue suddenly arose on 9th October. Whatever it was, the error (wording as set out in my initial post) was instantaneous and repeated each time WLM tried to send & receive. This happened instantly and continuously for over 2 days until I cleared the dns cache (Elevated command prompt, ipconfig /flushdns) and registered the dns (Elevated command prompt, ipconfig/registerdns).

This is one article I found helpful https://sourcedaddy.com/networking/registering-and-flushing-dns.html

I am again having intermittent problems. I am again getting the "Unable to send or receive messages for the Live.co.uk (username) account. Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems or a long period of inactivity. Server: 'pop3.live.com' Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC0F Protocol: POP3 Port: 995 Secure(SSL): Yes" but this time it is not every single time continuously for days on end. It is about 75% of the time. I close and reopen WLM 2012 several times and eventually it connects. It is extremely irritating particularly as I use this email account to pick up replies to this post. It is happening at the moment (ie live.co.uk will not pick up in WLM 2012). It is worse if I am using internet for another purpose at same time as WLM is trying to pick up emails. I wonder whether there is some kind of server issue. Are you also live.co.uk ?

Thank you, but actually I asked whether you could IMPORT the stored folders into Windows Mail (Windows 10 Mail). I know how to export from WLM 2012 (and how to import into another WLM 2012). What I need to know is whether it is possible to import all these thousands of POP3 emails which are currently stored in folders on WLM 2012 on a Windows 7 laptop into Windows Mail on a new Windows 10 laptop. If I cannot import the stored emails into Windows 10 Mail then there is no point in me using Windows 10 Mail (set up as POP3) because it is all the back catalogue of stored emails which I need to refer to - and add to using POP3. I cannot seem to obtain a definite answer as to whether import of stored folders into Windows 10 Mail is possible, although some posters seem to say it isn't. If it isn't then I can't use Windows 10 Mail which might otherwise have been a choice as I need a programme which is compatible with Windows 10 and is likely to remain so in future Windows - ie Windows 11 and so on.

It is essential to me that I have a (free) email client (host) programme which can support six email accounts (at least), uses POP3, will store emails locally in folders so that I can delete from servers, and will allow me to import my existing stored emails.

You asked about EXPORTING all your e-mails from Windows Live Mail.

    Before you begin:

    • Create a NEW folder in a location of your choice. Messages must be exported to an empty folder.

To export e-mail messages from Windows Live Mail:

    1. Open Windows Live Mail.

    2. In the upper-left corner, open the "File" menu (by clicking on the small down-arrow), then click "Export email", then select "Email messages".

    3. Select an export format from the listed choices, then click "Next".

Choose an export format which is compatible with whatever program you intend using to view the exported messages.

If you intend to use the exported messages in a new installation of Windows Live Mail, in step 3 you should select 'Microsoft Windows Live Mail' as the export format. Some e-mail programs will recognise, and import, messages in that format, so that is often a good choice even if you intend to use the messages with a program other than Windows Live Mail.

    4. Click "Browse", then browse to the folder in which you want to store the messages. Verify that the chosen folder is empty.

    5. Click "Next".

    6. Select the message folders you want to export, then click "Next". You will get a confirmation that the messages were successfully exported (if they were). When you see that confirmation, click "Finish".

Actually I understand the Windows 10 App does allow collection of emails via POP rather than IMAP. There are several articles on the internet showing how to do this. However if it doesn't allow import of stored folders/messages from elsewhere then that doesn't help me. I had felt that if using Windows 10 (Microsoft) it would be better to use Microsoft's own Mail App but it just doesn't seem to be suited to my needs. I will therefore probably use Thunderbird as this DOES cater for up to six email accounts, using POP3, local storage in folders and the ability to transfer the entire setup including storage folders from machine to machine when one changes laptop.

"If you download mail into both WLM and Thunderbird before deleting it from the server you will have backup copies." doesn't help me at this point because I have already deleted all emails from all servers. I always do this immediately after collecting in WLM (which is why I need to copy the local mail storage folders to the new laptop). However, if I end up continuing to run both the Windows 7 laptop and the Windows 10 laptop for the time being, then once I've set up Thunderbird and imported the storage folders I will download to both WLM & Thunderbird before deleting. (This can however be a problem with a gmail account using POP3 as gmail doesn't like downloading in POP to two places)

I certainly don't wish to pay for a mail client host programme.

    I am in UK

    Thanks again for your help

Sounds like you've worked things out, so...

    You're welcome.

    Don
