Windows 11 battery draining in sleep mode

Hi everyone,

After the upgrade to Windows 11, I've found that my laptop won't go to sleep after closing the lid. The fan keeps making noise with the lid closed, and the battery is drained.

When opening the lid again, the computer won't respond to anything (blank screen, power button does nothing, keyboard doesn't respond), but it's active because the fan is working.

This was working fine before the upgrade and is a major problem, because the battery dies pretty quickly.

Laptop is a Lenovo IdeaPad 530 i7 8 GB ram.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Best!

David

They will not even see it here. This is a tech forums staffed mostly by volunteers trying to help others with your problems.

Additionally, to make sure it gets seen if you're a Windows Insider you can report it in the Windows 11 Insider forums here which is monitored by developers:

I recently upgraded from a trusty Thinkpad T430 to a Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Pro (Ryzen 5800H) with Windows 11. I am appalled every morning to find my laptop hot and even spinning its fans if plugged in, or during the day to pull it out of my backpack and feel some warmth with 5-10% less battery life. I have no idea who thought that a professional machine with a hungry x86 processor should behave as a smartphone and be constantly on.

Sadly, my researching online has led to no way to disable completely Modern Standby and bring S3 Sleep back. Even the system reports it doesn't support it:

Is it really possible that a laptop cannot sleep or is it just somehow disabled in the registry? What can I do to enable S3 sleep?

    Many thanks

Well as a start its a very bad idea to leave your device in sleep overnight, for many varied reasons. The device should be shutdown overnight

You have updated drivers etc with the Lenovo update utility?

A system in low power mode should not be running fans or getting how. You need for check what a sleep study report is and spend some time learning how to read it.

    powercfg /sleepstudy

Copy the report to the desktop and open with a browser. Make note of where the report is kept after running the process.

Also be aware certain Bluetooth devices can wake the system up. Possibly, something else is also capable of bring the system out of low power mode.

Thanks for the advice. I have done that multiple times and never found an explicit culprit. For instance, here are 23 mins of sleep that cost me 5% battery... The "top offenders" don't say there is anything

here is a a bit more info:

    • the Windows push notifications service has been active

    • the CPU has had "non-attributed" time

This network activity is exactly why I want to completely disable Modern Standby. I do not want my "sleeping" laptop checking emails, chats, indexing file systems or scanning for viruses. At the very least, I want to disable the Network-connected side of Modern Standby. There seems to be no way to do it though.
