NVMe found/detected/recognized in BIOS but not found/detected/recognized by Windows 10 / Windows 11

I've seen similar posts scattered over the internet and no real solutions. The issue seems to be specific to AMD processors and respective motherboards. I've seen most posts related to MSI boards but I doubt it's limited to them.

Scenario:

You install a second NVMe drive onto your motherboard, your BIOS sees the drive, but Windows does not in Device Manager or Disk Management.

I've done everything from messing around with the BIOS to buying a PCIe NVME Riser to make sure it wasn't a bad NVMe connection. I know my MSI x470 Gaming Plus board supports 2 drives, this was not related to a disabled SATA port, or a drive support/compatibility issue. Nothing worked and I refused to reinstall Windows as a solution (as I've seen in other posts recommending). After spending way too many hours on this problem, I finally found the solution to my specific issue and it's all related to the "AMD-RAID Bottom Device" Controller Drivers that the AMD chipset software installs. For whatever reason, this AMD driver and Windows do not get along. The solution is to change/update the driver to the Standard NVME controller that comes with Windows.

Solution:

-Device Manager -> Storage Controllers -> Expand

-Find AMD-RAID Bottom Device -> Right Click -> Properties -> Driver -> Update Driver

-Browse From My Computer -> Let me pick from a list -> Select Standard NVM Express Controller -> Next

-Within 2 seconds, everything seems to be working without any issues.

I posted this so the internet will archive this for future use. Hopefully this helps someone out there who's had similar issues. Or runs into them randomly after an AMD Chipset update.

System specs:

AMD Ryzen 2900X

Asus X470 Gaming Plus - Latest at time of post

Disks:

Samsung Evo 970 Plus 500 GB M.2 NVME
WD BLACK SN850 1TB
Samsung SSD 850 EVO 500GB

-WDC 1TB Drive

GPU: GTX 970

OS: Windows 10 x64 Pro & Windows 11 x64 Pro

Update (7/19/2022):

Happy to see people getting value from this post. After doing some investigation, it seems like the AMD chipset drivers install the AMD-RAID Bottom Device drivers. For some unknown reason, Windows defaults to those drivers and it shouldn't. It should be using the Standard NVM Express Controller. This is probably why people who do a fresh install don't see this problem since the AMD-RAID bottom device drivers wouldn't be installed. These drivers are only supposed when setting up a raid array using the amd raidxpert utility. Otherwise for 99.9999% of regular users, the standard windows driver is sufficient.

I think I have similar problem to Yours, but this solution didn't work for me. Nevertheless I will ask You, and the community - maybe there is anyone who can help me. I have ASUS TUF Gaming A15 laptop (FA506QM) and after some time I needed to buy more storage [(have small kids - games (I really didn't know how much space games require right know...)]. So I bought PNY NVMe - PCIe SSD 2TB M.2 2280 CS3040 M280CS3040-2TB-RB, installed in laptop and used it. Everything looked normal, till last weekend. Laptop isn't used everyday for gaming purpose, it's for work, and on the second NVMe disk was only games, so I don't know when problem (no disk - could not find files when I hit Lego Ninjago icon two times) occurred (during last update or earlier). I've checked in BIOS, everything is fine - disk is where it's should be, i even can pick it for boot option, BUT when Windows 11 starts or even Windows 11 installation USB starts it's gone... I tried different drivers, even Windows 11 clean install, but nothing helps. Right know - on clean Windows 11 - in Device Manager -> Storage Controllers it occurs with problems - could not start device "this device cannot be started. (code 10) a card hardware I / O error has occurred". I have other computer, so I put out NVMe drive and put in to the other computer - work normal, with access to all games and files, when I put it back to laptop, the same problem mentioned above. I tried to reinstall device drivers like You wrote but still the same error "this device cannot be started. (code 10) a card hardware I / O error has occurred". Please HELP if anyone has any idea...

You sir are a legend!

The same problem stroke me on a Gigabyte B450 Gaming X paired with an AMD Ryzen 5 2600, and after upgrading to Windows 11 and updating AMD Raid Software, my Sabrent Rocket 512GB NVMe M.2 SSD was no longer shown in file explorer, but strangely, it was still visible in BIOS.

I applied your fix and voila, the NVMe drive is back in business.
