Item checkboxes cannot be disabled on windows 11

I recently upgraded to windows 11 on my laptop, and I can't disable item check boxes in the file explorer.

Disabling item check boxes works on the desktop, but not in the file explorer (see attached screenshot).

I have tried disabling "Use check boxes to select items" in folder settings, and changing the value of HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\AutoCheckSelect to 0 in the registry, both of which do not solve the problem.

Any help would be much appreciated :)

    Is it a Touch device?
    I have seen a couple of reports where item checkboxes cannot be disabled on Touch devices.

    Edit 02/16:

    This is by design if the device is in tablet mode. Quoted from a Microsoft employee I talked to:

    If the device is in a tablet posture (for example, the keyboard is folded back), then it's expected.

    This is a forced issue because they want you to upgrade. If you notice the OS still behaves okay, and there is no notable battery drain.

    This issue persists on only the Surface devices they really didnt want to support. Eventually there will be a fix, but they quickly silencing this because they know...

    I just noticed this same behavior on my Thinkpad L13 Yoga. It correctly hides the checkboxes in normal laptop mode but when I flip the keyboard away in "tablet mode" then it ignores your setting and forces the checkboxes. Ignoring the fact that I flipped it into tablet mode to make room for my much better keyboard and am still using it just the same as a normal laptop. So as seems to be the usual workings of Windows 11, Microsoft knows what you want and if you don't want that, you should change your mind and do as Microsoft has deemed is the correct way of doing things even if it makes no sense.

    Please pay attention to all of the feedback that is being provided for Windows 11 asking you to actually give us the options to customize things the way we want them to work instead of forcing things on us.

    Just uninstall. MS does stuff like this all the time to try and make you think you have problems. I am sure all this is fixable, even probably by the user, but who knows what reg tweak to make or what driver to roll back to?

    This is an MS inflicted, intentional bug to try and keep systems off that arent compatible. They know about it, they wont fix it.
