Item checkboxes cannot be disabled on windows 11

I recently upgraded to windows 11 on my laptop, and I can't disable item check boxes in the file explorer.

Disabling item check boxes works on the desktop, but not in the file explorer (see attached screenshot).

I have tried disabling "Use check boxes to select items" in folder settings, and changing the value of HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\AutoCheckSelect to 0 in the registry, both of which do not solve the problem.

Any help would be much appreciated :)

    Sorry to hear that Marc.

    Windows 11 "detects" when it is in tablet mode.

    When in table mode, checkboxes are ENABLED and compact mode is DISABLED to provide more space for touching.

    I'm sure there are some models that don't provide the proper messages to the OS to tell it which mode it is in.

    My suggestion is check for BIOS updates. And if that doesn't work, search for any process that runs at startup that you can kill with Task Manager or SysInternals Process Explorer and see if it works.

    Like the Realtek Service, some software can intercept messages or send improper ones that apparently tricks Windows 11 into thinking the laptop is in TABLET MODE.

    Not VALUE. You need to search for KEYS.

    Select the HKEY_CURRENT_USER node.

    Then perform a search and CHECK the box next to KEYS and UNCHECK the box next to VALUES and DATA.

    We only want to find KEYS that EXACTLY match "RUN".

    Thanks, DJO_34 for the detailed instructions. Alas, it did not work for me. After deleting RtkAudUService and rebooting, I still can't remove check boxes or switch to compact view. Hopefully others have success with this.
