Widows 11 setting default program for jpg files is not working

Just installed W11, clean install. I installed Irfanview for my image viewer and simple editing. However it will not associate jpg and png file types, although it did for many other file types. I tried installing as an Administrator. I tried setting associations from within Irfanview. I tried going to the Default Programs control panel and tried to associate jpg files with Irfanview. JPG is not listed in the file types. Nore is png. Both have been taken by Photo Viewer and nothing seems to make it give it up.

I understand that VLC video viewer is also having trouble with setting file associations.

I am using the 64 bit version of Irfanview, latest version. I am using Windows 11 Home.

I think I fixed it. I went to "Apps and Features", found Microsoft Photos, clicked on the hamburger menu on the far right, chose "advanced options" went to the Reset section and performed both the Repair and the Reset functions. After that I was then able to associate jpg and other file types to Irfanview.

Here is the process that just worked for me. Settings>Apps then search the word "photos". You should see "Microsoft Photos" listed. Click on the 3 dots to the right side of the Microsoft Photos tab and select Advanced Options. Then scroll down to Reset and click the Repair button. Once it's done go to a photo, right click and hit the Change button and select Irfanview>Apply>Save.

The change tab does not appear on the properties window until you run the repair.

It doesn't work in latest Win11, as some filetypes such as jpg or png are not visible on the list and the settings are not modified.

I cannot express how furry I am.

Since at least last 10 years 81% of people install Chrome as a web browser just after installing Windows and they still do not acknowledge that their web browser simply goes against user expectation.

Now they do the same with the default image browser....

Not to mention default audio players....

Wasted already 2 hours to try to change the default image browser.... found 311 MILION answers in Google... where non of them within first 50 pages works....

    ... welcome to idiocracy.

Irfanview from the MS Store does not even allow me to acces file extensions to create associations... so I shall remove that app and get the one from the web again, since that at least works moderately....

This worked for image file types. Except now I can't find MP4 or AVI file types either. Here's what I get:

I despise kludgeware, and Windhosed 11 is a prime example.
