Widows 11 setting default program for jpg files is not working

Just installed W11, clean install. I installed Irfanview for my image viewer and simple editing. However it will not associate jpg and png file types, although it did for many other file types. I tried installing as an Administrator. I tried setting associations from within Irfanview. I tried going to the Default Programs control panel and tried to associate jpg files with Irfanview. JPG is not listed in the file types. Nore is png. Both have been taken by Photo Viewer and nothing seems to make it give it up.

I understand that VLC video viewer is also having trouble with setting file associations.

I am using the 64 bit version of Irfanview, latest version. I am using Windows 11 Home.

I think I fixed it. I went to "Apps and Features", found Microsoft Photos, clicked on the hamburger menu on the far right, chose "advanced options" went to the Reset section and performed both the Repair and the Reset functions. After that I was then able to associate jpg and other file types to Irfanview.

    The 'reset/repair MS Photos' method works for me, but the issue comes back when Irfanview is used to set the desktop wallpaper with the wallpaper spread (tiled) over two monitors.

    It looks like Irfanview is triggering some damage, although I am not 100% sure whether it is also to blame. Irfanview would not trigger this in W10, but does so in W11. Either a W11 bug or Irfanview needs an update, I am guessing the latter.
