Widows 11 setting default program for jpg files is not working

Just installed W11, clean install. I installed Irfanview for my image viewer and simple editing. However it will not associate jpg and png file types, although it did for many other file types. I tried installing as an Administrator. I tried setting associations from within Irfanview. I tried going to the Default Programs control panel and tried to associate jpg files with Irfanview. JPG is not listed in the file types. Nore is png. Both have been taken by Photo Viewer and nothing seems to make it give it up.

I understand that VLC video viewer is also having trouble with setting file associations.

I am using the 64 bit version of Irfanview, latest version. I am using Windows 11 Home.

I think I fixed it. I went to "Apps and Features", found Microsoft Photos, clicked on the hamburger menu on the far right, chose "advanced options" went to the Reset section and performed both the Repair and the Reset functions. After that I was then able to associate jpg and other file types to Irfanview.

Looks like the problem is with irfanview, not Windows 11. Its possible some versions or most versions of irvanview have file association broken with Windows 11 at this time. An OS doesn't just magically decide what applications can do. The applications have to do that. Its possible Windows 11 has a bug but that would happen for all file types and all applications most likely.

I am convinced the problem lies with Microsoft Windows 11, since in the default apps section file extensions are missing

Microsoft Photos not in list of default apps, but Windows Photo Viewer is. It does not have a hamburger menu.

Still cannot fix this problem. Irfanview does NOT allow setting of extensions.

I think it fails because of the issue with the file types being missing. VLC player also has this problem. When you use the "Choose a default by file type" in the settings panel you can not find some of the common file types such as jpg and png.

This did the trick! Thank you!
