Help with "Windows 10 installation has failed" at 73% on Windows 8.1 Pro

Every time I try to install Windows 10 through the Media tool I always stop at 73%. I tried to do it on a Clean Boot and it was the same. I also tried to remove the "read-only" and "system" attributes on the "$WINDOWS.~BT", but it doesn't let me change the "Read-Only" attribute on a file called boot.sdi and I don't know how to remove the "System" attribute.

    I was getting the error at 73 percent. I was able to install by disconnecting from the internet so the installation could not up date. Installed just fine after that.

    I tried to upgrade Windows 10 from Windows 8.1 for a week before finding this thread.

    Thanks to the advice here...after the installation files downloaded, when the "Creating Windows 10 Media" screen popped up, I unplugged the internet cord.

    After primary installation, a screen popped up that said working on updates. Then I plugged my internet back in to let these updates download.

    Yay! It worked. :-)

    Hi Folks - I did get the upgrade as this group suggested by shutting off my internet just as it was going to check for updates. I had spent literally 20 - 30 hours trying different things before I tried shutting off my internet! Thanks to all!

    I had the same problem. There is a dialog somewhere at the start of the install process that gives you the option to install Windows 10 without updates. I tried installing again, this time i chose to install Windows 10 without updates. It worked for me. After my computer rebooted, updates started installing automatically anyway. There was a minute when the screen went black, so if that happens to you don't freak out. It will come back on. I hope this works for you.
