Windows 11 Related Discussion [NOT OFFICIAL]

Our luck might be changing here. Asus have released a beta bios for their older 6th and 7th gen boards that will support win11 on their B250 series boards. Bear in mind this is a BETA bios so I'd make sure that you have a test rig or a motherboard that you're not worried about losing and can re-flash using a CH341A re-programmer. What ever you do, don't install a beta bios on your main PC. Haven't seen any update from any others or if there has been any release on the Z200 or 100 series boards but that might change if this beta is successful.

Just a quick update. Thought I'd have a look at my bios and sysinfo in windows to see why MS decided not to support 7th gen kaby lake. Apparently its to do with hardware DMA Kernal protection and I think that when this is enabled it also enables VBS as well and I can't find a way to enable the DMA protection on mine.

If Win 11 is on your main machine then you should have put it on a virtual build (VirtualBox) as it is easier to handle if things go wrong. You might be able to do a roll back either through windows update or apps and features (not sure which) to go back to windows 10 if you did the insiders build through windows update. If you did it via USB stick then the only thing I can suggest is to back up what you can on to an external hard drive before you wipe the disk to install windows 10. Only put in this lettering as I've been caught out once or twice my self doing it this way and ended up kicking myself after.

Thanks. I don't mind upgrading the board and CPU or even getting a new desktop. I guess eventually we'll have to anyway. I guess I'll wait until the release date and see what happens. We can hold out hope that more 7th gen's will make the cut. Although I have all my stuff saved and backed up I'm not looking forward to having to reinstall 10 and go backwards!

My honest answer when it comes to the 7th gen CPU's is I don't know. Bear in mind as well that whether the developers build was installed via iso or downloaded via windows update is really only sent out as a tester to see what needs to be done and what issues come up for anyone that uses it and we'll probably know more once MS starts letting us download android apps and we can start testing them on a 7th gen system and if there are no faults and crashes then maybe there will be more 7th gen in the list but don't quote me on that as I'm just a guy making a guess. In the long run though I'd stick with 10 for the time being especially if funds are limited. That said eBay do have 8th gen hardware (Motherboard and CPU) for less than £150 - £200 on the used and re-furbished side but that still really depends on your budget and whether it is affordable or not for you to get one. As for the updates, honestly I think that's anyone's guess realistically. It's unlikely MS would implement that or even would be able to as I think its really nothing more than a scare tactic. Once the evaluation and retail copies start coming out I think people will be doing testing on 7th gen hardware proper so we'll know more then.

So, since they are not going to let my i5-7400 run the final W11 I will have to reinstall W10? What will happen on the release date for those of us that have been successfully using W11 for all this time if we don't reinstall W10?

I upgraded through the Insider program. Is there a difference between what will happen as opposed to those that did a clean install of W11 from the iso?

I've heard there will be no updates but that we might be able to manually update.

I have the Media install tool on a usb stick to reinstall W10 if it comes down to it.
