Lenovo Legion Desktop 5i keeps freezing and bsoding

Recently, I got a legion 5i, model T5-28IMB05. It's a great pc, it has good specs and it's really fast in games. However, since day one I've been getting random freezing issues. This happens absolutely randomly, but not so often - only once a day.

Whenever I'm doing anything (even something not power-intensive like browsing the web) my pc could freeze and bsod. This is how it looks like: the pc stays on a screen (freezes) then after about a minute it cuts to a blue screen and gives me an error message: DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION.

Every time my pc restarts after the bsod, my realtek audio drivers go missing, and there is no sound coming from the pc, as well as the audio device being hidden in device manager. Strangely enough, after a hard power off (holding the power button) the realtek drivers come back.

Another possibly related issue I've been having is that my wifi card just cuts out during large downloads like steam games. It will be going at full speed, until it drops to 0 mbs and kills the internet for my pc until I restart the wifi.

I've tried doing a fresh install of the newest nvidia driver, did the built in memory check twice, fixed registries with errors in them via a third party application, and I've even done a completely fresh install of windows from a usb stick.

    THIS IS THE OFFICIAL FIX (FINALLY!):

    I got my Lenovo PC which had the same issue back after I sent it in 4 times! I pushed them very hard to fix this. And FINALLY they found the issue and the FIX (or at least a very easy workaround)!

    They wrote:

    Dear customer,

    please do NOT enable "NVIDIA USB 3.10 eXtensible Host Controller -1.10(Microsoft) in device manager. This disabled device is part of NVIVIA driver and is not present in your system, therefore causing conflict with other drivers resulting in freezing and stop errors (BSOD).

    Lenovo is in the meantime working together with NVIDIA on resolving this issue releasing a new driver that will fix the issue.

    If you proceed with recovery or new installation of the Windows operating system, please always disable this device in device manager!

    Working with the PC on Windows 11 with the newest NVIDIA drivers (512.15) for two days now without any issue, before this it was crashing at least twice a day so this is definitly a "workaround" without negative side effects, which fixes the problem for now. I am sure everybody who has the same issue will be very happy about this. This post has >11000 Views so there must be quite a few of us...

    If this is a Lenovo PC issue and it still hasn't been fix, that's just dumb. I haven't had this issue no more since the last year of September . I just reverted back to a 466.77 version.

    I managed to convince my Legion T5 28IMB05 to run Nvidia Studio Driver 511.65 (The latest at the moment - Released 2022.2.1) for many days without any problems. I read in several sources that problem is related to the conflict between nVidia and Realtek drivers. I can live without built-in audio - I use Bluetooth headset or USB speakers or HDMI interface to the monitor (I plug my 3.5mm jack into the monitor socket). So no reason to stick to Realtek.

    Here is what I did:

    1. I disabled on-board Realtek audio through UEFI (BIOS)
    2. Rebooted in Windows 11 safe mode 
    3. Uninstalled Realtek audio drivers with DDU
    4. Uninstalled exisiting nVidia drivers with DDU (GameReady from Lenovo)
    5. Disconnected internet and rebooted Win11 in Normal mode
    6. Installed Nvidia Studio Driver 511.65
    7. Reboot - no freezes for at least two weeks with daily usage of several hours

    Before disabling the on-board audio I tried different latest nVidia drivers and computer was guaranteely freezing several times per day, now I'm running the 3rd week with 0 problems.

    I mostly use PC for Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, Internet browsing, video watching (youtube, udemy), rendering and editing video (GPU is in use in this process) and sometimes play WreckFest.

    I run the latest Windows 11, but I'm sure it will work with Windows 10 too. Hope this will help.

    Thanks to all for the helpful information. Unfortunately nothing worked and I returned my 1 week old Lenovo desktop to Costco.

    I tried older Nvidia drivers, no Nvidia drivers and the latest drivers that Lenovo released a few days ago. It seemed like everything caused my freeze ups to happen more often.

    Now, for the fun setup of another computer. Spent an hour trying to get my speakers to work with this one (Dell), it's always something.

    Funny thing is. My last computer, I built it from parts I got from Newegg and it ran flawlessly for 14 years. This time I thought I'd save time and just buy one off the shelf. Wow, was I wrong!!

    Good luck to those still having issues with the Lenovo.

    Just did this. Latest 511.65 released date 02/01/2022 with the HD audio unchecked during installation. Not sure how long this will last but the latest BSOD Watchdog Violation was gone for a while until last week and this week with windows update. Somehow with HD audio unchecked during installation, I'm still getting sound thru the Display Port via my monitor's built in speaker (LG). Don't want to clutter the desk again with speaker via 3.5 jack. We'll see how long this fix last.

    Edit: Still freezing. This time without the watchdog violation. Just plain freeze up. Updating to 511.79 02/14/2022 release. If this doesn't work then going back to the old old one that works,
