This is a summary of the cumulative updates released on January 12th for all the supported consumer releases of Windows 10. 

  1. Windows 10 version 2004 and version 20H2 - KB4598242, Build 19041.746 and 19042.746
  2. Windows 10 versions 1909 - KB4598229, Build 18363.1316

    So what is wrong now with Windows updates and ISO downloads?

    I have four systems on a network, three running Windows 10 Pro V 20H2 OS Build 19042.630 and one running Windows 10 Enterprise V 20H2 OS Build 19042.630

    Windows updates have failed across all platforms since the release of the October cumulative update with the error code 0X800f081f. None of the recommended 'fixes' work. And believe me I have tried them ALL.

    Downloading and running the Update Assistant only results in a window 'Thank you for updating to the latest version of Windows' and does nothing.

    Downloading the ISO to perform an in-place upgrade fails as the option to retain programs is NOT offered - only a clean install option.

    This is due to the version being offered through the ISO download page being 3 months outdated.

    So just what is wrong with this 'update' system?

    I understand why the Update Assistant doesn't do anything because you are already on the latest version. Windows 10 version 20H2.

    I'll check the ISO and post back.

    I have tried the initial release of version 20H2 ISO so build 19042.1 (effectively)

    It works fine to offer keeping all files, apps and programs as part of a repair install.

    Once you had downloaded the ISO image did you disconnect from the internet or select not to check for updates or did you just mount the ISO in File Explorer and run setup from the new drive letter and not change any settings within the setup process?

    If you did disconnect from the internet or change settings then try again and allow the setup process to check for updates.

    As an aside if you wish you can download KB updates from the Microsoft catalog and try them manually on one computer as a test. https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Home.aspx

    Have you ran the windows update troubleshooter?

    Hi

    Many thanks for your response and reply.

    The ISO fails to offer any other option than clean install - the other check boxes are grayed out.

    This is the same for all four systems running here.

    Method: Download ISO, run, allow to run and check for updates - says updates found and program needs to restart - completes the download and verifies, agreement accepted etc - choose what to keep - nothing only option.

    Yes, I have manually downloaded from the KB database - all attempts again fail with the same error code as the windows update.

    To install the October cumulative release, I had to use the ISO method (it worked then).

    All of the cumulative updates released since October have failed to install on all systems.

    I have also cleared and reset Windows update, to no avail.
