Cumulative updates January 2021

The number of problems post that people are clearly experiencing with this update are somewhat disturbing and there is clearly something wrong with it in some configurations and the Windows Update process itself.

I have repeatedly experienced issues following some updates which seem to send the search indexing process into overdrive and totally crippling the search function and the machine. 

I would add that I am only experiencing problems on my laptop, my two the desktop machines have never experienced any problems with the updates.

Before you say then it must be the Laptop, well it clearly is, but I suspect it's some microcode bios/cpu incompatibility as all three machines run the exact same OS installation from the same ISO. The laptop is a new Dell Intel cpu, while the desktops are AMD R5 and R7 cpu's. Running all the standard OS troubleshooter/validation/checking/fixing tools on the OS installation have always returned with no errors found.

The only workable solution for me so far has been to uninstall the problem KB, look in your update history to locate the latest KB installed, then block it from further installation using the specific Microsoft provided tool for this which can be downloaded here from Microsoft: t.ly/J0rh 

Note that this isn't a permanent solution as it will inevitably raise it's head again, however I have found that when the next update comes and the install delay on the previous one has expired the previously problematic KB will be installed again as will the now new KB, and once again the problem reappears then just uninstalling the latest one will "solve" it for now. This process tells me that the issue is definitely related to the actual system update process and the machine where something is set, or left behind, that causes the issue which appears transparent to all the standard system checking tools.

Hello mrdbeta, the firmware and driver on Dell website are very old. I have the last firmware 7.15 and it works fine with the 7.14 driver.

The problem is the 7.15 driver. I could try to install it again, but I think that it will fails.

Last night my PC installed KB4598242

Today none of my printers work.

Tried the printer troubleshooter. Tried reinstalling printers. Tried restarting the spooler. Tried cacls utility on PRINTERS in system32\spool. Nothing.

In the end I finally realized KB4598242 had been installed at 3 o'clock in the morning. Removed it and the printers started working.

KB4598242 causes a severe issue with Xbox Controllers over USB: it results in a USB Device not recognized error and disconnects any other USB devices including mouse and keyboard until you unplug the problem device and restart the system.
