Error 0x8007000d installing windows updates

2020-12 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 2004 for x64-based Systems (KB4592438)

It fails every single time. I've gone through several potential fixes with no luck. Error code: (0x8007000d)

The only thing that fixed the '0x8007000d' error for me was upgrading my windows through MediaCreationTool20H2 tool, I have tried everything else I could find online and nothing worked, but after upgrading windows with this tool "Create Windows 10 installation media"

found here: "https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10" my problem went away. Choose the option 'Upgrade this PC now' after opening the app and then the option keep apps and files, that option is default anyway. Here is the link Download Windows 10 (microsoft.com).

edit: Just in case, there are two downloads on the page the first is "Update Now" the second is "Download tool now", use the second one 'download tool now'. Some people have said the upgrade might fail for some if unnecessary USB drives and devices is plugged in while doing the upgrade, I haven't experienced this, but just in case unplug all unnecessary USB devices.

    ok, found the solution...uninstall windows reality ( VR )

    It appears the reason is Windows Mixed Reality...

    To install the Windows 10 update:

    Open Settings (WIN+I)

    Click Windows Mixed Reality

    Select Uninstall

    Reboot

    Open Settings (WIN+I)

    Select Windows Updates

    This worked for me thank you !

    yes, well..... that last step did not turn out to work either. I ended up using the link for the batch script provided by Cytraveler and to download and examine (for safety purposes) using windows sandbox. batch scripts are simply 'batch' or series of commands that execute a series of command prompt commands. it functions exactly like the Autoexec.bat of old. Anyways. after examining the script for shenanigans, I determined it was safe. I ran the script in windows and was able to run a repair setup. what I have gathered from my little debacle: DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSATANCES DO A REPAIR SETUP WITHOUT DOWNLOADING UPDATES. I downloaded my windows setup files April 5, 2021 using the media creation tool, so they were very recent. but performing a repair install that does not download updates installs the version of 20H2 that has broken repair installs and is unable to be updated. only by allowing windows setup to fetch the updates can this problem be bypassed. so, despite the suspicious language and way Cytraveler posted, his method is indeed correct. That is, unless you prefer the nuclear option (reformat and clean install).

    As the saying goes, "Don't count your chickens before their hatched.". the adding of the april cum update using DISM got to 5.00% and errored out with with the now infamous 0x8007000d error code. so i am now trying to install the update listed in the link before (KB4586853) to get my windows to 19042.663, which should fix the update errors as well as the inplace upgrade errors.
