Switching between user logins freezes taskbar

The case:

My wife and I share the same home PC for work, that we use independently throughout the day. We would like to be able to switch between our users without having to log out and close/reopen our respective documents and apps. Kinda like how it works on a Mac when you switch between multiple active user login sessions.

The Problem:

Whenever we try to use the "Switch User" functionality, the taskbar freezes (doesn't load) on whichever user you switch to. The only way to unfreeze the taskbar is to log out completely on one user (and subsequently close all apps/documents), and then login to the other user afterwards.

What I have tried:

  • A fresh Windows install
  • Add a new and fresh user (stops working after a reboot)
  • Running DISM.exe /CheckHealth, /ScanHealth, /RestoreHealth
  • sfc /scannow

Extra info:

Both users have Admin account type and our Windows 10 is updated to the latest version.

It is very discomforting to see that relatively simple and ubiquitous peripherals like mice and keyboards can interfere with the OS so badly. Disabling HID devices is a poor workaround for something that MS should fix in the OS or the OEM manufacturers like RAZER should comply with MS specs. But then you have a MS intellimouse freezing the taskbar on an MS OS, it seems that MS itself has an internal interoperability problem.

I can confirm that the razer death adder v2 is indeed the cause of this issue for me as well. Simply unplugging it for a few seconds while the taskbar is freezed instantly fix it. I have had this issue for half a year at least.

I tried completely wiping my m.2 and reinstalling win10 two times with no luck. Both on old and brand new hardware. Two different storage devices (ssd/m.2) . Effectively two different PCs.

I could reproduce this issue right away after install.

Two other computers of mine, with no razer products attached with same windows version, and top notch hardware has not encountered this issue what so ever.

I've also noticed that the start up processes of everything in the start up folder does also freeze and will not continue until the taskbar is unfrozen.

May I ask why you said your problem is caused by Razer device? Does this means you have not meet this taskbar issue since you changed your Razer mouse?

    Hi,

I proved the case never happens when I use another mouse brand (Steelseries), and salways happened when I used my Razer   However, the workaround captured in thus thread (disable HID compliant...) worked!

RTA6, I can confirm that Razer devices are the problem here. After reading the above, I tried unplugging my Razer Ornata V2 when the task bar goes missing; it immediately resolves itself, and then I am free to plug my keyboard in.  So now, if a fellow family member needs to log in, I just advise them to:

    1. Log in
    2. Unplug razer keyboard
    3. wait 5-7 seconds
    4. plug keyboard back in.

    it works great.
