Indexing runs, completes, and then restarts and does it again.

Windows 8.1, Lenovo Carbon X1 20A7.  The problem started for no reason I can think of.  No new programs installed, no material changes.  I ran System File Checker, CC Cleaner, Glary Utilities, and System Mechanic.  No luck.

I found a fix.  Regedit, then search for Windows Search.  Click on SetupCompletedSuccessfully, and change the value to 1, save and close Registry.  Then Control Panel/Indexing Options/Advanced and click Rebuild.  This will take several hours, but you can use computer while it works.  When it says it's complete, reboot, go back to Regedit SetupCompletedSuccessfully, and change the value to 0.

    I have deleted the windows.edb file, put Search in Manual mode and rebuilt it successfully.  Now when I reboot, Search does not restart the whole process, so that's a workaround until I need to search for a file created after the last rebuild.  

    I'd like to find a permanent fix.  Do you think it would be worthwhile to run chkdsk?  

    Any other ideas would be welcome.

    Thanks for your suggestion, but no luck.  SFC showed errors and fixed them the first time, no errors the second two times.  Starts up faster post SFC, though it wasn't slow before.  Indexing finished during the day and didn't restart, but it restarts after PC shuts down overnight after it finishes backup.  Takes several hours to complete while I'm using PC.  ~500,000 files when finished, and I have it set to only index documents and emails.
