Windows 10 Feature Update 20H2 consistently fails with 0x80242016 error

Feature Update to Windows 10, version 20H2 has failed to installed 43 times. The message in the "View Update History" indicates "Last failed install attempted on MM/DD/YYY - 0x80242016".

I've tried numerous posted articles to correct the 0x80242016 error to no avail. Will I've tried various suggestions to delete the the update and download it, windows update trouble shooter, or stopping/starting various services before attempting to reinstall the update. I have not be able to use the DISM command, with the local source files because I cannot locate the Windows source files on my PC. Open to ideas and suggestions.

What risk to my machine would there be to perform a Windows 10 Update In Place from 1909 to 20H2 (assuming I can download an install the most current version/build)?
Would the update in place reuse my current license/activation.

I just installed windows update KB5001931 for windows 10 today and worked. After a week of failures Microsoft fixed the problem. I have build 21H2.

Hi, I'm Georg and I'm facing the same issue. Over and over the updae is failing. I tried all the hints and procedures spending hours and hours days and days. I give up. I will not try again.

What will happen in future? How will Microsoft proceed if this update is not installed?

if you actually tried all the solutions listed here and they didnt work (even the one i said works) then maybe you will need to clean install everything and get done with it (easier said than done i know) ,but i dont think Microsoft is gonna do anything about it tbh

when i tried this fix ,i was able to update from 1909 (which i was stuck with for almost two years) to 2004 then to 20h2 and finally to 21h1 without a problem ,so maybe you dont exactly have the same problem as most of us do ,also you didnt answer my question on how all of this started ,the eventual fixes your tried besides this one and if you cloned your OS from hdd to ssd before all this started (for me this was the action that corrupted the bcd and started the problem)

did this solution work before for you and now its not working ? also did you try other solutions aside from this one .

from what i have read and judging from my case ,this only works when you have your bcd partition corrupted and in most cases after cloning your hard drive to an SSD ,which was exactly my case ,post more details ,about since when this started happening ,and the possible other solutions you tried ,and maybe me or someone else may be able to help

The solution shown worked once only.

The second time after getting install error 0x80242016 I have t wipe everything and reinstall Windows 10 from beginning + all software which took forever which is what I am trying to avoid.

Now every time there is a feature update I get error 0x80242016.
