importing photos from iphone not showing in folders by date taken

I have always used autoplay or photo app to import photos from my iphone to my Windows 10 computer.  As of this week (maybe since the last Windows update) the photos do not import in the standard folders by date taken as they always have.  They are just randomly going to my pictures folder, not within folders by date as they always have. Photos I imported on December 10 did as they always do.  When I imported photos today from the last several days they just went to the pictures folder. I have rebooted my computer, rebooted my iPhone X and tried importing just one new photo.  It is still not working as it always has.  Any assistance would be welcome.    Thanks.

I just go straight to the iPhone link that shows up on File Explorer when I plug in the phone. It should show up on the "This PC" list. I don't bother with the Win10 Photo app.

When you see the link for the phone, right-click and the "Import Photos and Videos" link shows up on the menu. If your iPhone comes up on AutoPlay, the File Explorer option should be available there as well.

When the import window pops up, click on "More Options" and there you will find the folder creating options. They can be grouped by name, date imported, date taken, and other combinations. This is also where you can change the AutoPlay options.

I've also used the photo transfer utilities from Canon and Nikon to transfer images from my DSLR. The applications are free for anyone to download and use, and they will read the iPhone directories and also create individually dated folders. But, I don't remember if they have issues with reading all the subdirectories within the iPhone's DCIM directory.

On our Mac, I don't bother with Apple's Photos app. I do all of the transfers using Nikon NX-Studio application. Rather than importing as individual photo files, Apple's Photos app not only dumps everything into a single directory, but all the photos populate a single monolithic file. If you want individual photo files, you have to export them out of the Photos app. It seems that Microsoft has mimicked that approach with the Windows Photos app.

    When I do that I do not see Photo Gallery as an option.  What version of Windows do you have?

    I also have the same question and have found it very frustrating. I haven't copied my photos on my IPhone X to my Windows 10 computer for a while and had about 9 months worth of photos to copy. All my photos are stored by Year-Month in folders.

    I do not understand why Microsoft would suddenly remove such a useful feature. Can we not have a facility to copy all folders to a particular folder or into Year-Month folders within a selected folder. This must be frustrating a lot of Users. Come on Microsoft, please sort this problem out. Thanks in advance.

    I have a similar problem and I think they are related: When browsing my iPhone photos using Windows 10 (Enterprise version, build 17134.2026), I tried to sort them by date taken (by clicking the "Created" column). The outcome is not sorted at all, in neither direction (sample date sequence as listed is: 3/8/2020, then 1/9/2021, then 12/16/2020. This is hopping up and down on the date scale! It seems that Windows does not handle the creation date and time stamp correctly.

    For me, and for many on here I noticed this took place right after a Microsoft update. Someone on a previous page replicated it on a separate PC.

    There is only one response to this from the 'Microsoft Community' on the first page, resolving it by going into iPhone settings and changing the conversion of the pictures to something compatible, to keeping the originals as is while transferring. Doing so will render them non-viewable for most as they will need a codec.

    This codec, can be purchased at the Microsoft store online.
