Microsoft Outlook Application Crash due to UCRTBASE.DLL

Windows 10 Build 2004

Outlook crashes intermittently and generates the following Application Event Log error.

I have run SFC /SCANNOW

I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled Microsoft Office 365

    We are also running Sophos Endpoint Protection in our environment. We may be on to something here.

    However, all of my users are running it, but not all of the users are experiencing the issue, which is why I kind of wrote the AV off throughout the troubleshooting process. Additionally, the problem ebbs and flows with no real consistency.

    On a side note, I appreciate everyone commenting and giving this issue some traction. With more eyes on it, I'm confident we can figure this thing out.

    Just for more data points.  Our clients are also running Sophos on a VDI environment through VMWare.  The issue has slowed down a lot since a couple of weeks ago but still pops up time to time.

    Unfortenately, I'm not one of the lucky few anymore, since the problem just started happening to me, without signing out, restarting my PC, installing software, restarting Outlook or whatsoever over the past 3 days. Just suddenly.

    Perhaps it's the virus scanner (Sophos Endpoint Protection / Sophos Central) that intervenes within the proces and recently got updated with new instructions for intervention...

    In the beginning it looked like the problem was user-bound, while I was unable to reproduce the issue with my account.

    But after about 12 retries (restarting Outlook after every try), the issue showed up.

    Conclusion: the problem is not user-bound, but computer-bound.

    However with my account on my own PC, I'm not experiencing the issue (yet), despite the ucrtbase.dll in C:\Windows\System32 is exactly the same on both computers.

    Yes, looks like that particular DLL module is the corrupt component. We are looking into this internally and will share the next plan of action with you shortly.
