I'm not sure what happened but usually I can download pics from sd card and they go to a folder with the date. Now each pic is saved individually. How can I get it back to the way it was before.

Microsoft wants you to use OneDrive.... wait.... they DON'T want you to use OneDrive because your phot folder is too big... WAIT.... they WANT you to use OneDrive and pay for more storage for your photos.
That's what it comes down to, and it's obscene.
It's a sad state of affairs that some of us have to use Windows as an OS because of the programs we want to run, but MS can't leave good things alone.
I found a solution that works great for me, it goes back to using the Win7 Import Pictures and won't open the Photo app which I never cared to use. Scroll down to "Restore “Import pictures and videos” AutoPlay Option in Windows 10" on this page:

I have done all this but when I hit change destination and add the folder it shuts down.
You have a strange idea of the meaning of the word "improvement" - where exactly is the improvement for the user? If you had introduced different options, that would be an improvement, removing choice entirely is not something I would class as an "improvement"!
