Windows 10 update issue due to error 0x800f0831

Dear,

I'm on Windows 10 1903. Every few days the systems attempts to update itself but finally reverts.

KB4577671 error 0x800f0831

This drives me crazy.

I tried to get help from Microsoft support. During the last session they even deliberate managed to shut down my the computer while they where on remote assistance. End of shift? So far for my confidence I Microsoft support.

I checked a few things

  1. scf /scannow finds no problem
  2. dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth results in

[=========                  15.5%                          ]

Error: 4448

The WOF driver encountered a corruption in the compressed file's Resource Table.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\WINDOWS\Logs\DISM\dism.log

I'm not smart enough to understand the log file.

  1. I attempted a full Windows 10 install from media it also failed. Problem during the second boot, whatever that means, and revert to the earlier version as well.

I'm not willing to reinstall this pc from scratch since I have some music editing applications configured and working in a way that I'm really doubt I can ever reconstruct it the same way.

I believe the problem is in the corrupted file encountered by dism. Can anyone help me out?

    Mcafee was uninstalled. Retried updating windows. Failed. Reset computer to factory new and am reinstalling programs and files from scratch. Done wasting time on an obvious windows issue.

    If mcafee comes by default then the factory reset will bring it again. What you need is windows 10 20H2 installation from scratch. Make a usb bootable then install the new build.

    Since I've got several setuperr and setupact log files on different locations but none of the them in the location you indicate I've copied the entire directory.

    Hi Sarah,

    I found this Value=""C:\Users\Sarah\AppData\Roaming*uTorrent*\uTorrent.exe" /UNINSTALL" /> on your appraiser_humanreadable.xml file . If you are using utorrent then now you know why your computer is infected and why your update get the error 0x800f0831. Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800f0831: Security Update for Windows (KB4577671)

    If I where you i will download windows 10 20H2  and go for a new installation from scratch. click on Download tool now and  make an USB bootable .

    Let me know what is your decision.

    Hi there, 

    I've had pretty much the same issue for 8 months. Tried everything, removing old software, drivers, running wureset, sfc, dism and looking at any usb issues and everything that I could find on the forums to no avail. 

    Today I noticed in BIOS that secure boot was disabled. I enabled it and ran 20h2 update from usb stick created from media creation tool. I let it download updates. It worked. I am going to try it on a different machine with same issue but maybe this will work for you? 

    It should work for 2004 & 20h2. 

    BIOS - enable secure boot

    What you need is windows 10 20H2 installation from scratch. Make a usb bootable then install the new build.

    This ultimately did the job for me, thanks a lot, L'invincible. USB was not even needed.
