Windows 10 update issue due to error 0x800f0831

Dear,

I'm on Windows 10 1903. Every few days the systems attempts to update itself but finally reverts.

KB4577671 error 0x800f0831

This drives me crazy.

I tried to get help from Microsoft support. During the last session they even deliberate managed to shut down my the computer while they where on remote assistance. End of shift? So far for my confidence I Microsoft support.

I checked a few things

  1. scf /scannow finds no problem
  2. dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth results in

[=========                  15.5%                          ]

Error: 4448

The WOF driver encountered a corruption in the compressed file's Resource Table.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\WINDOWS\Logs\DISM\dism.log

I'm not smart enough to understand the log file.

  1. I attempted a full Windows 10 install from media it also failed. Problem during the second boot, whatever that means, and revert to the earlier version as well.

I'm not willing to reinstall this pc from scratch since I have some music editing applications configured and working in a way that I'm really doubt I can ever reconstruct it the same way.

I believe the problem is in the corrupted file encountered by dism. Can anyone help me out?

    I also had remnants of a MacAfee installation that I didn't install. There is an official removal tool that gets rid. It can take up to an hour. This didnt help the windows update issue though.

    And utorrent and bittorrent didnt affect it either. Only thing that worked for me was enabling secure boot in bios.  I will try on another machine soon to confirm if it works a second time.

    Sometimes it's not an option for people to clean install... for me, I have so much audio software and so many plugins it would take me months to start over. I do however create a Veeam backup of my entire system before attempting a windows update. 

    I posted above that there is an offical MacAfee removal tool but even after running that, the upgrade didn't work. But it's worth running anyway just to get rid of the remnants. 

    It would be good to hear if anyone else can get the update to work by checking secure boot is on in bios... I had switched mine off a few years ago to allow me to run other non-standard OS's and not switched it back on.

    On another thread, someone elses secure boot was off but greyed out so they couldn't switch it on. They updated the bios (I assume this then switched secure boot on) and then the update worked for them. 

    It's worth a try and something no one else has seemingly looked at yet

    Hi there johnnyk_1985,

    It finally got resolved!!!!!

    But it succeeded after I disabled secure boot. So I toggled it the other way around. Anyway after at least 20 upgrade attempts in the last 4 months, with assistance from all over the place the only thing that really helped me out was to disable secure boot in the bios. All earlier attempts stranded in the famous second boot error and reverted back.

    You are right, it's sometimes not an option to clean install a system. In this case I'm pretty sure I couldn't get the system in the same shape anymore after a reinstall. There were too many undocumented configurations and tweaks I did over the years. The system did fine, except it didn't accept upgrades anymore, until today.

    I'm so glad I have this stupid issue behind me! Thanks again johnnyk_1985.

    that's brilliant. I'm glad thats two more of us who can now update. I will post back if I can replicate this on my desktop machine that also has the second boot phase error.

    I replicated the Toshiba Satellite Pro "Secure Boot" fix on my Dell OptiPlex 990 MT.

    1.

    In the bios go to Security and enable TPM - Trusted Platform Module (secure boot), apply & reboot back into bios.

    Go back to TPM again and activate the TPM you just enabled.

    Apply & reboot back into bios

    2.

    Go to Virtualization Support

    activate:

    Virtualization (Vx) ,

    VT for direct io (VT-d) and

    Trusted Excecution

    Apply, save and exit into Windows.

    3.

    Create install usb using Media Creation Tool. Allow updates and keep all personal apps and files. Continue with the installation. Come back in 40mins!
