xbox series x controller via bluetooth not recognized in games

I bought an xbox series x controller (not xbox one) from someone who had an elite and don't need the new controller. I'm sure it's authentic. I can connect it to my windows 10 pc via bluetooth and it appears as an xbox wireless controller.

However in all games it is not recognized as an xbox controller but a generic bluetooth "18 (don't remember the exact number) button controller with HAT" or something. And it doesn't work in any of my games.

Is this a known issue or did I do something wrong? It feels like either the controller is so new windows doesn't know it yet, or I'm missing a driver software, or games need to specifically support it. Anyone has similar experience? Thank you!

Edit: on 11/10/2020 MS updated its Xbox Accessories app which adds Xbox Series X/S controller bluetooth support. All you need to do is to connect the controller with a USB-C cable, open the app, go through a rather lengthy update, and now the controller connected via bluetooth is working perfectly.

    Annoying that new XBOX controller don't work on legacy bluetooth devices.

    Like any vendor you're force to buy new equipment to keep updated.

    This is exactly my thoughts as well. I specifically bought this controller to get an Xbox controller experience over Bluetooth. Since it simply doesn't work as it's supposed to, I've had to get a dongle which is exactly what I was trying to avoid. Very frustrating.

    The issue to me is that there is not a full Xbox Series X controller driver for bluetooth.  That means everything after that will be a rigged system that does not have the same level of support.  The whole thing is a bit of a bait and switch then, as the bluetooth is not fully supported.

    The only reason I bought the controller was to get full windows integration on every app.  If that only works with the wireless dongle they sell...then I wouldn't have bought the thing.  It sounds like right now that is the case.

    So does it work on bluetooth...the answer is sort of.  That means it shouldn't be listed as supporting it.  It is a downgraded support from cabled connection and at this time that is just nuts.

    Right now I cannot sit 2 feet away from my bluetooth and play the same way I can cabled.  I have to jump through hoops and deal with all sorts of configuration issues....which is exactly what people using this controller rather than a generic are trying to avoid.

    Give us a full xbox series x controller driver on bluetooth, or remove the labeling that says the series x controller supports bluetooth.  It doesn't.  It supports a generic emulation using a substandard driver.

    Nope, I have a One S/X Bluetooth controller and it works fine with a wired connection, but when connected to the PC via bluetooth either has huge lag/ some buttons wont work or just straight up isn't recognised in games.

    You can try adding your games to steam, then, open big picture go settings>controller settings>xbox controller>Togle on "extended compatibility" and launch your games from big picture steam. And thats it, it works for me.

    Is it works for non-steam games? Origin?
