xbox series x controller via bluetooth not recognized in games

I bought an xbox series x controller (not xbox one) from someone who had an elite and don't need the new controller. I'm sure it's authentic. I can connect it to my windows 10 pc via bluetooth and it appears as an xbox wireless controller.

However in all games it is not recognized as an xbox controller but a generic bluetooth "18 (don't remember the exact number) button controller with HAT" or something. And it doesn't work in any of my games.

Is this a known issue or did I do something wrong? It feels like either the controller is so new windows doesn't know it yet, or I'm missing a driver software, or games need to specifically support it. Anyone has similar experience? Thank you!

Edit: on 11/10/2020 MS updated its Xbox Accessories app which adds Xbox Series X/S controller bluetooth support. All you need to do is to connect the controller with a USB-C cable, open the app, go through a rather lengthy update, and now the controller connected via bluetooth is working perfectly.

    Same problem.

    i bought 2 of them

    I have tried to pair it with the an Apple TV. 

    • It connects as an "Xbox Wireless Controller" over bluetooth but no buttons or sticks have any interaction with the Apple TV and a couple of seconds after pressing keys in frustration it disconnects from the apple TV on to reconnect after a coule of seconds with the same behavior.

    I have tried to pair it with the an Lenove Laptop win 10 Home

    • they are found as bluetooth "Xbox Wireless Controller" but no interactions / button clicks are picked up by system or steam. The stick movement is reconized ni a non "standard" way. (like pushing the stick all the way triggers 3 steps in the navigation).

    I did everything (updates bluetooth, windows, controller drivers), got a bluetooth 5.0 and still same problem 3nd day i was fighiting with this issue. Works perfectly when I use USC-C cable, so it must be something with drivers. Guess we need to wait couple days...

    I have BT 5.0 and I have tried everything that has been discussed here, but the problem still persists. The only way to use this controller with the PC is using MY OWN USB-C cable... And 3 days after receiving it, there is still no valid solution. Right now, for me is useless.

    Some other user has commented that it is solved using the Windows Insider Program, but the only "beta" available is in the "Development Channel". The last time I used one of those I had to reinstall from scratch. No way i'm going through that again.

    For when some drivers of the year 2020 that work with our controllers?

    A solution now!

    Hi everyone,

    i had the same problem,

    updated windows and the controller and still didnt work

    SOLUTION: be sure your bluetooth dongle is 4.0 !!!!!!!!

    mine was an old asus bluetooth dongle 3.0 with no BLE (bluetooth low energy). I just ve bought a new one and the controller is now recognised!

    xbox series controllers need a bluetooth dongle with BLE technologie!
