xbox series x controller via bluetooth not recognized in games

I bought an xbox series x controller (not xbox one) from someone who had an elite and don't need the new controller. I'm sure it's authentic. I can connect it to my windows 10 pc via bluetooth and it appears as an xbox wireless controller.

However in all games it is not recognized as an xbox controller but a generic bluetooth "18 (don't remember the exact number) button controller with HAT" or something. And it doesn't work in any of my games.

Is this a known issue or did I do something wrong? It feels like either the controller is so new windows doesn't know it yet, or I'm missing a driver software, or games need to specifically support it. Anyone has similar experience? Thank you!

Edit: on 11/10/2020 MS updated its Xbox Accessories app which adds Xbox Series X/S controller bluetooth support. All you need to do is to connect the controller with a USB-C cable, open the app, go through a rather lengthy update, and now the controller connected via bluetooth is working perfectly.

    Yeah it's the same for me. Varies a lot from game to game. In Project Wingman the dpad is normally used to change weapons, and the right stick to look around, but when using the controller in bluetooth the dpad does both those, so I look around any time I change my weapons, then Yakuza Kiwami is unplayable in bluetooth, the bindings are completely rearranged, with right stick click being the start button, triggers moving the camera, etc, then some games like Horizon: Zero Dawn everything appears to function perfectly fine.

    I've tried everything at this point to try and fix the issue, updating windows, controller, drivers, etc. I really hope an update is pushed out at some point, I really like this controller but am contemplating selling it and getting an Xbox One controller again, because that at least worked in Bluetooth.

    In my case, the controller works fine in some games but does not get recognized in others (such as Sekiro) or gets recognized as a BT input device (in NBA2k21). Windows 10 fully updated, BT drivers updated and Gamepad updated through the app. Same problem. Borrowed a Xbox wireless adapter and problem solved! Recognized everywhere....

    Yup, same problem here. My controller had been working fine for awhile but as of just recently that no longer appears to be the case. Buttons no longer work properly in-games. There's no new updates for the controller thru the accessories app, and I made sure to update windows too, which didn't fix anything. Guess we just gotta wait.

    I agree it is Windows, which is not good news and a long time to wait.

    Microsoft says 20H2 is a requirement for the controller.

    Good luck, you may want to look at other controllers.

    Thanks DumDum. I've already got the most recent BIOS, Bluetooth driver, firmware, so I suspect it is the issues with Windows. I am, however, running LTSC so won't be getting 20H2. Our next update is due at the end of '21.
