xbox series x controller via bluetooth not recognized in games

I bought an xbox series x controller (not xbox one) from someone who had an elite and don't need the new controller. I'm sure it's authentic. I can connect it to my windows 10 pc via bluetooth and it appears as an xbox wireless controller.

However in all games it is not recognized as an xbox controller but a generic bluetooth "18 (don't remember the exact number) button controller with HAT" or something. And it doesn't work in any of my games.

Is this a known issue or did I do something wrong? It feels like either the controller is so new windows doesn't know it yet, or I'm missing a driver software, or games need to specifically support it. Anyone has similar experience? Thank you!

Edit: on 11/10/2020 MS updated its Xbox Accessories app which adds Xbox Series X/S controller bluetooth support. All you need to do is to connect the controller with a USB-C cable, open the app, go through a rather lengthy update, and now the controller connected via bluetooth is working perfectly.

    Now when I go to use the xbox accessories app it pops up with a thing saying "Syncing data..." which is stuck permanently at 0%, so I can't even check for updates to the controller.

    In my case, the controller works fine in some games but does not get recognized in others (such as Sekiro) or gets recognized as a BT input device (in NBA2k21). Windows 10 fully updated, BT drivers updated and Gamepad updated through the app. Same problem. Borrowed a Xbox wireless adapter and problem solved! Recognized everywhere....

    Sounds like Bluetooth drivers does not fit requirement of controller is the problem. Only works on specific Bluetooth devices at the moment.

    Yeah the wireless adapter is best route to go when Bluetooth is not working at the moment.

    Who knows how long Microsoft and Bluetooth vendors will take to fix this one.

    I can't imagine how many bluetooth makes and models there are to update.

    Yeah it's the same for me. Varies a lot from game to game. In Project Wingman the dpad is normally used to change weapons, and the right stick to look around, but when using the controller in bluetooth the dpad does both those, so I look around any time I change my weapons, then Yakuza Kiwami is unplayable in bluetooth, the bindings are completely rearranged, with right stick click being the start button, triggers moving the camera, etc, then some games like Horizon: Zero Dawn everything appears to function perfectly fine.

    I've tried everything at this point to try and fix the issue, updating windows, controller, drivers, etc. I really hope an update is pushed out at some point, I really like this controller but am contemplating selling it and getting an Xbox One controller again, because that at least worked in Bluetooth.

    Hi CRCasper,

    I had the same problem as you when i first got the controller only worked on cable. Until i updated Windows to 20H2 and used the accessories apps to update to the latest firmware on the controller. I updated my BIOS too on my system and bluetooth drivers just to make sure everything was updated.

    Not sure, if the controller works on the latest hardware as i brought my laptop 5 months ago.

    I did a screenshot of my windows updates for you to compare if that helps

    In Control Panel, navigate to Programs > Programs and Features.

    Click on 'View Installed Updates' to see the full list of additional updates.

    Just like to add that I am also having this issue. Controller works fine plugged into USB, but once on Bluetooth then it's not correctly recognised by Windows, Steam, or any games. Definitely not an issue with Steam, games, or my Bluetooth, it's a problem between the controller and Windows. Really disappointing to see a Microsoft product not working correctly with the Microsoft software, but nowadays I guess I'm not surprised. Keen to see a solution to this soon or I guess I'll see what alternative bluetooth controllers are around.
