xbox series x controller via bluetooth not recognized in games

I bought an xbox series x controller (not xbox one) from someone who had an elite and don't need the new controller. I'm sure it's authentic. I can connect it to my windows 10 pc via bluetooth and it appears as an xbox wireless controller.

However in all games it is not recognized as an xbox controller but a generic bluetooth "18 (don't remember the exact number) button controller with HAT" or something. And it doesn't work in any of my games.

Is this a known issue or did I do something wrong? It feels like either the controller is so new windows doesn't know it yet, or I'm missing a driver software, or games need to specifically support it. Anyone has similar experience? Thank you!

Edit: on 11/10/2020 MS updated its Xbox Accessories app which adds Xbox Series X/S controller bluetooth support. All you need to do is to connect the controller with a USB-C cable, open the app, go through a rather lengthy update, and now the controller connected via bluetooth is working perfectly.

    ***SOLUTION***

    Very simple fix guys. I was having the same issue as most of you here - Xbox controller connected and recognised but not working.

    Follow the below steps;

    1. Make sure the latest Windows update has installed and isn't pending etc.
    2. Unpair your Xbox controller from your bluetooth settings
    3. Plug controller in to PC via USB cable
    4. Download and launch Xbox Accessories app
    5. You will see a message on Xbox Accessories saying that an update is required for the controller
    6. Click the the update required button
    7. One update is complete re connect your Xbox controller via bluetooth 
    8. Done

    The one thing I want to find out is--is this problem my own or has anyone else tried it? Given how new XSX is I suppose not many have tried.

    Made sure that Windows 10 is updated (currently in 20H2), the Xbox Accessories is updated (300.2011.9001.0) and the controller itself is updated (5.5.2614.0).

    You can update the firmware on the controller by either pairing with annold xbox or new one or using thr Accessories app on Windows.

    Youll need s usb-c cable to update via Xbox accessories on Windows.

    make sure to unpair the controller and repair after all the update’s.

     the device now should have a slightly different name and end with 4 digit number so Xbox Wireless Controller ****

    Same issue here.

    Controller connects fine via bluetooth, but is not detected correctly in games. Even the "Game Controller" Utility detects it wrong. And the Xbox Accessories App does not detect it when connected via bluetooth either. When plugging in via cable I was prompted to update controller firmware, but this didn't solve my issues either.

    I think this screenshot illustrates the issue rather well.

    Yeah, they can get ahead of themselves some times.

    The WIndows Central article says they made a bluetooth Series X controller but Series X doesn't even Support Bluetooth yet. So there we have it.

    If you want to report this to Microsoft use the Feedback Hub app in Start Menu where developers are tasked to process consumer feedback. They will not even see it here. This is a tech forums staffed mostly by volunteers trying to help others with your problems.

    If you want to post back a Share link from your Feedback here others who see this thread can vote it up and add to it. I will also vote up the feedback with my MVP badge and track the issue.
