xbox series x controller via bluetooth not recognized in games

I bought an xbox series x controller (not xbox one) from someone who had an elite and don't need the new controller. I'm sure it's authentic. I can connect it to my windows 10 pc via bluetooth and it appears as an xbox wireless controller.

However in all games it is not recognized as an xbox controller but a generic bluetooth "18 (don't remember the exact number) button controller with HAT" or something. And it doesn't work in any of my games.

Is this a known issue or did I do something wrong? It feels like either the controller is so new windows doesn't know it yet, or I'm missing a driver software, or games need to specifically support it. Anyone has similar experience? Thank you!

Edit: on 11/10/2020 MS updated its Xbox Accessories app which adds Xbox Series X/S controller bluetooth support. All you need to do is to connect the controller with a USB-C cable, open the app, go through a rather lengthy update, and now the controller connected via bluetooth is working perfectly.

But it says on the box it self that Bluetooth will work.

I am having the same issues, successfully paired via Bluetooth, but no game or Xbox accessory app will recognize the controller inputs.

There you go. That’s what I have been dying to find out. So it’s a universal problem. Who knew MS will release hardware its own software does not support?! For now the solution is to get a wireless adapter. I bought a cheap 3rd party one and it works flawlessly.

Which one did you get, I might have to zip up the road to get one myself.

I'm glad to help. I only wish I could do more. But you can always ask for me here, especially for Windows install questions which are my specialty.

Yes this is what I used. The bot asked a few questions and when I said all of them didn't work, it says "ok you can connect to a person below". Then I was sent to a chat channel. When they again gave some generic tips about how to troubleshoot bluetooth, I was sent to "experts" where I waited for an hour before giving up. I was in line 17 all the way to 3 and then never advanced.

At this point I've pretty much given up too. The adapter worked, and there's no hope this thing gets resolved before the return window is closed (I'm pretty sure it's a drive/config file updating thing), so I'll just go on using the adapter. The silverlining is the next time MS decides to release another controller that again doesn't work with Windows, at least I already have the adapter 😂

Thank you so much for helping me along the way.

Are you sure you used the Feedback Hub? I never heard of them chatting with anyone, or even replying to any of the Feedback. Supposedly on trending issues they may ask for logs or more information to squash a bug, but I've not seen it yet.

We have complained about this a lot, so maybe they're actually responding now? But chatting, really?
