I bought an xbox series x controller (not xbox one) from someone who had an elite and don't need the new controller. I'm sure it's authentic. I can connect it to my windows 10 pc via bluetooth and it appears as an xbox wireless controller.
However in all games it is not recognized as an xbox controller but a generic bluetooth "18 (don't remember the exact number) button controller with HAT" or something. And it doesn't work in any of my games.
Is this a known issue or did I do something wrong? It feels like either the controller is so new windows doesn't know it yet, or I'm missing a driver software, or games need to specifically support it. Anyone has similar experience? Thank you!

Edit: on 11/10/2020 MS updated its Xbox Accessories app which adds Xbox Series X/S controller bluetooth support. All you need to do is to connect the controller with a USB-C cable, open the app, go through a rather lengthy update, and now the controller connected via bluetooth is working perfectly.

2020-11-09T20:53:19+00:00 My 3rd party wireless adapter has arrived. As I suspected it solved the problem. I would have still preferred bluetooth though. I used the Feedback Hub and chatted with someone. Not particularly helpful. I was then sent to an "expert" but am still at position in the line. I didn't see how I could create a ticket or anything. 2020-11-09T18:27:22+00:00 Wireless may be your best bet, since it's generally more stable than bluetooth.
Are you running any other Bluetooth devices at the same time? This can conflict. Another reason wireless may be preferred here.

2020-11-09T18:09:54+00:00 Thank you. I tried a few things. I update Windows to the latest optional update and it didn't help. There is no more update. I downloaded Xbox Accessory but it doesn't support the Xbox series x controller. It kept asking about for an xbox one controller to be connected. I also connected the controller to the PC via a usb cable. No update was prompted. BTW the controller works correctly when connected by a cable. So I've actually bought a wireless adapter and hope that will solve the problem, although I still prefer just a straight bluetooth connection.

Please do not skip any steps. We often find out later that the fix was the skipped step. If you need help performing any step I will help.
