H&R BLOCK 2019 BUSINESS SOFTWARE WILL NOT OPEN ANY MORE

This is Windows 10.

I had been using the 2019 H&R Block business software just fine. Last time used was July 15, 2020.

Went to open to prepare Sub-S return on Sept 12 and kept getting an error message saying it could not open. I tried having Geek Squad look at it. They spent about 2 1/2 hours running diagnostics and could not figure it out. I had another IT pro look at it for about 3 hours, ran diagnostics and the best he could figure was that it was a Microsoft update that somehow corrupted the ordering sequence for the program to open. All of my clients are locked up now. The other thing is that it also corrupted the 2018 program so I cannot access those files either.

Tried downloading a new 2019 Block program. Overwrote the old one. Still same problem. Loaded the software from the disc. Same problem.

Trying to get through to Block is a joke. You will spend hours on the phone.

Any thoughts?

I found that the H&R Block software cannot access the data store on the computer.

    *********   C:\ProgramData\H&R Block Business\H&R Block Business 2019\DataStore\Data ******

I opened a command prompt and tried to change to the directory.

When I tried to go from C:\ProgramData\ to the next level I got the following error:

    C:\ProgramData>cd H&R Block Business

The system cannot find the path specified.

'R' is not recognized as an internal or external command,

    operable program or batch file.

I have loaded the 2020 Version of their software.  It is working okay and recognizes it Data Store but not the 2019 Data store that is on my computer.

Please pass this on to H&R Block.

No, it's a problem with the Business program that's unrelated to the internet. If you can get it to work, you can Pause Windows Updates (not the Defender security updates though) for up to 35 days, and hopefully you can complete your returns before Windows updates again.

I reloaded Business 2020 after enduring a frustrating learning curve about the nature of the problem.  Then all the data for two of the three returns I was working on was reentered and the returns were promptly printed (the third return is still gone but it had been completed and printed before everything disappeared).  Part of my continuing frustration relates to all the historical information for prior year returns vaporizing.  Hence my my March 15 comment about 2018 and 2019.  Hopefully that problem will prove to be just an academic concern.

Note that the fix is different for 2019/20 and for 2017/18. After performing the Restore Database operation, select Open Saved Return from File menu. H&R claims uninstalling software does not remove returns. You might contact them for guidance but they're hard to reach.

After you have performed the Restore Database operation... Be sure to select Open Saved Return from the File menu to see a list of returns.
