H&R BLOCK 2019 BUSINESS SOFTWARE WILL NOT OPEN ANY MORE

This is Windows 10.

I had been using the 2019 H&R Block business software just fine. Last time used was July 15, 2020.

Went to open to prepare Sub-S return on Sept 12 and kept getting an error message saying it could not open. I tried having Geek Squad look at it. They spent about 2 1/2 hours running diagnostics and could not figure it out. I had another IT pro look at it for about 3 hours, ran diagnostics and the best he could figure was that it was a Microsoft update that somehow corrupted the ordering sequence for the program to open. All of my clients are locked up now. The other thing is that it also corrupted the 2018 program so I cannot access those files either.

Tried downloading a new 2019 Block program. Overwrote the old one. Still same problem. Loaded the software from the disc. Same problem.

Trying to get through to Block is a joke. You will spend hours on the phone.

Any thoughts?

Hi DHarris, I agree - however - H&R does not "control" the programmers at Microsoft. As I understand it there is one single file that is causing the whole issue. Each time one Microsoft team creates a security update - it breaks the file from the .Net team.

IMHO H&R should move to a new database.  (They only moved to .Net a few years ago - hence the start of these issues)!

As I mentioned earlier - I just moved to Drake Software.  My time is too valuable to fight this fight!  Best, -Nick

I have moved over to Drake Software.  I gave up on this battle.

As mentioned prior, For H&R 2020 make sure to download the latest updates at https://www.hrblock.com/tax-software/updates-back-editions/federal-windows.html  Good Luck!

Here is what I don't understand. If there is a supposed fault in the Windows update, why can't Block do a work around so that we don't continue having this problem with each update. All of my prior Business Block software opens and works just fine all the way back to the earliest one on my computer which is 2011.

Do I need to roll back Windows Updates before applying these fixes?

Yes, that would make sense, but apparently the programmers for the Business program don't want to change the type of database software they use. It would also make sense if Microsoft wouldn't keep changing a key file every month that this, and presumably other software based on the same database system, depend on. But of course, Microsoft doesn't care.
