H&R BLOCK 2019 BUSINESS SOFTWARE WILL NOT OPEN ANY MORE

This is Windows 10.

I had been using the 2019 H&R Block business software just fine. Last time used was July 15, 2020.

Went to open to prepare Sub-S return on Sept 12 and kept getting an error message saying it could not open. I tried having Geek Squad look at it. They spent about 2 1/2 hours running diagnostics and could not figure it out. I had another IT pro look at it for about 3 hours, ran diagnostics and the best he could figure was that it was a Microsoft update that somehow corrupted the ordering sequence for the program to open. All of my clients are locked up now. The other thing is that it also corrupted the 2018 program so I cannot access those files either.

Tried downloading a new 2019 Block program. Overwrote the old one. Still same problem. Loaded the software from the disc. Same problem.

Trying to get through to Block is a joke. You will spend hours on the phone.

Any thoughts?

This did not work for me because when I try to run software I get an Unexpected Error message, rendering the software useless. Selecting items from the Help menu doesn't work. Nothing happens.

    Hi John,

You are VERY WELCOME! Great to hear - and good luck on tax season!

(In a prior post I also pointed out all the directories to backup to get full backups.  Good to have! )

    CHEERS! -Nick

As an update to my prior post I did receive a phone call back today from H&R Technical Support.  The person who called from H&R today has been very helpful during the last two years as issues have arisen.  As I understand it there is one file, which is provided by Microsoft, that H&R Block's business software relies on that Microsoft has not updated to be compatible with the Windows 10 updates in DEC 2020 (and similar issues in prior years). So essentially Microsoft is shooting itself in its own foot - and H&R Block Business (and other software companies reliant on Microsoft) are all in the same boat. [Links for prior years attached below.]

H&R is trying to improve the situation. I know the person I spoke to at H&R is doing everything that can be done to make things better.  Just very bad luck of timing for H&R this year.

Thanks so much.  This worked for both 2019 and 2018.  All returns are rolled over to 2020 now!!!

Posted CCH support solutions worked for 2018, 2019  and the  2020  version

    thanks!

My program did not have the DataStore file.  I tried to load the new one anyway, but that did not appear to work.  I had the same problem as mentioned above with the Business Program loading but when I tried to open it I got the message "Program has encountered an error and needs to close".

    Hi All,

I Echo Nicholas Geti.  For those of you new to this thread please read all the posts since about January 2nd.

Also, I did end up moving to Drake Software (www.drakesoftware.com). Drake is pro level software recommended by my CPA. BOTH personal and all business (over 6,000 forms) are included. In my case I do some tax work - my CPA handles other.  Drake has no issues with Windows. With Drake they include all tax years back to 2002 at no extra charge. There is NO IMPORT from H&R - I had to retype everything.  I bit the bullet and made the swith.  If you are really good at taxes and fairly good at tax software I highly recommend it.
