Display driver amdkmdag stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

I've been having crash issues for months now with no solution. I've been able to narrow it down to a windows issue but no solution seems to be available.

At random points during gaming (COD Warzone) the video card driver stops working and then immediately recovers. I get a black screen for around 5-10 seconds and that causes my game to crash. It is extremely frustrating.

I have done clean installs of Windows 10 64bit, tested with both NVidia and AMD GPU's, various video card drivers (up to 1 year old), and various other checks and setting changes.

I'm hoping that someone can please respond to help me figure out what is causing this issue because it is extremely frustrating.

Thank you,

Gregg

Hey everyone,

I have finally fixed this issue fixed on my PC. I'm so damn happy 😅

Changing my input from DisplayPort to HDMI resolved it. This fixes the crashing completely, even with two sticks of memory in dual-channel mode at full speed 3200Mhz.

This got me curious, since I saw that using HDMI limits my refresh rate to 100Hz. So, I switched back to DisplayPort but forced it to run at 120Hz instead of the full 144Hz. This also runs flawlessly with dual-channel memory and IMO confirms that 144Hz (combined with certain memory configurations) is somehow the causing the crashes.

I've ordered a new DisplayPort cable to see if it resolves the issue at 144Hz, but even if it doesn't I'll be happy with 120Hz since the 5600XT rarely gets above 120 FPS in games I play at 1440p anyway!

I hope this helps some of you.

EDIT: Sorry to hear about your new issue Tyler. I am on the latest Window 10 update and AMD drivers (I now have the full AMD Overlay etc installed) and have not run into that problem.

EDIT 2: New DisplayPort cable has the exact same issue at 144Hz. I can live with 120Hz so it's all good and no more crashes :)

EDIT 3: I other solutions posted online to get 144Hz working. Summary is here: https://evanshortiss.com/amd-driver-memory-lock-timeout

    Great find!

I've been plagued by cold boot crashes for over a year now and switching to single channel (A1-A2) seems to have fixed it for me too.

I tried with 2 different rams, the one rated for the mobo only crashes in dual channel while the one rated for only the CPU crashes all the time.

    Full specs:
    CPU: 5600x
GPU: Gigabyte Radeon RX 5700 XT GAMING 8GB OC GPU
    MOBO: Gigabyte X570 AORUS ELITE
    RAM
    - HYPERX Predator RGB DDR4 3600 MHz PC RAM - 8 GB x 2 <- crashes only in dual channel

    - G.Skill Trident Z RGB 16GB (2x 8GB) 3200MHz DDR4 <- Cold boot crashes regardless of single\dual channel

Hopefully someone from AMD, will take notice of this.

I have filed a support request with AMD describing what we've found in detail. Hopefully they respond in a reasonable time.

Also, I can confirm that using slots B1 and B2 also works fine for me, so dual-channel memory configurations are 100% related to whatever is happening.

So is the problem one of these?

    1. Bad motherboard/BIOS
    2. Bad memory controllers
    3. Bad GPU drivers
    4. Some mixture of the above 3

Edit: I'm glad this helped you CompHel_!

Edit 2: PUBG just crashed for me when running memory in B1 and B2. I'm little stumped now.

Bad news, things seem ~better~ with Ram in single channel, but I have still had a few crashes since last week. Unfortunately haven't had a lot of free time so I'm not sure I can even confidently say it's better, but it's definitely not fixed 100%.

I also just sent in a pretty comprehensive crash log to AMD via the bug report too, which also included a link to this thread. Really hoping I end up hearing from them at some point and can maybe do some troubleshooting with them.

    EDIT:
I've been bamboozled, I forgot I tried a clean remove and update of drivers last week and went to the latest radeon release, 21.4.1 and it seems like that may be the source of my """new""" crashes. I'm now getting a different but comically similar message in event viewer:
Display driver amdwddmg (WD!) stopped responding and has successfully recovered.
reddit thread of others having this issue: https://www.reddit.com/r/AMDHelp/comments/mwo29a/amdwddmg\_driver\_issue/

Not sure if this is just AMD updating the naming of the driver or if this is actually a different part of it. But, there was a 4 day break where I got no warnings, then there's multiple of this one in every day my computer was on. I just got done rolling back to the 21.3.2 release, so we'll see how that does over the next few days.

Thanks for drawing attention to this issue. I eventually found that the issue was being caused by my webcam, which had been sending bad data to the GPU for encoding, causing the GPU driver to eventually crash. It's Rofeer branded, and I bought it for an outrageously low price. Turns out it was too good to be true.

I'd suggest that anyone having this issue try disconnecting their peripherals and hopefully they find that one of them is causing the issue.
