Display driver amdkmdag stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

I've been having crash issues for months now with no solution. I've been able to narrow it down to a windows issue but no solution seems to be available.

At random points during gaming (COD Warzone) the video card driver stops working and then immediately recovers. I get a black screen for around 5-10 seconds and that causes my game to crash. It is extremely frustrating.

I have done clean installs of Windows 10 64bit, tested with both NVidia and AMD GPU's, various video card drivers (up to 1 year old), and various other checks and setting changes.

I'm hoping that someone can please respond to help me figure out what is causing this issue because it is extremely frustrating.

Thank you,

Gregg

Hey everyone,

I have finally fixed this issue fixed on my PC. I'm so damn happy 😅

Changing my input from DisplayPort to HDMI resolved it. This fixes the crashing completely, even with two sticks of memory in dual-channel mode at full speed 3200Mhz.

This got me curious, since I saw that using HDMI limits my refresh rate to 100Hz. So, I switched back to DisplayPort but forced it to run at 120Hz instead of the full 144Hz. This also runs flawlessly with dual-channel memory and IMO confirms that 144Hz (combined with certain memory configurations) is somehow the causing the crashes.

I've ordered a new DisplayPort cable to see if it resolves the issue at 144Hz, but even if it doesn't I'll be happy with 120Hz since the 5600XT rarely gets above 120 FPS in games I play at 1440p anyway!

I hope this helps some of you.

EDIT: Sorry to hear about your new issue Tyler. I am on the latest Window 10 update and AMD drivers (I now have the full AMD Overlay etc installed) and have not run into that problem.

EDIT 2: New DisplayPort cable has the exact same issue at 144Hz. I can live with 120Hz so it's all good and no more crashes :)

EDIT 3: I other solutions posted online to get 144Hz working. Summary is here: https://evanshortiss.com/amd-driver-memory-lock-timeout

Your Logitech problem might be linked with the USB side of it; if the amdkmdag/nvlddmkm issue is indeed linked to the chipset, when the crash occurs, your Logitech app might reset as if it were new USB connections happening.

Been a few weeks since I last posted. Ive had next to no crashes since then, maybe only once or twice. I recently changed keyboard and to wireless mouse, removed non required USB accessories (mousepad+LEDs+Headset Holder).

I had also reinstalled my C++ 2008 SP.

Is anyone running a VR headset?

Also the only crashes ive had are in 3D Mark Time Spy stress testing which after some fan curve changes and overclock changes ive managed to get a pass score on so might be worth a few of you trying.

A really weird thing happened now. I was running Rocket League again today, it was running fine for almost 7 hours. However i switched anti aliasing from off to High Fxaa and frame limit from 63 to 245 and then it crashed! So, my plan for tomorrow is to change fps limit from 245 to 144, which would match the refresh ratę of my monitor. Then if that fails i'll also turn off AA and then go back to 62 fps cap. Maybe when gpu tries to send more frames than the monitor can display something goes wrong? But then, does our chipset theory still hold up? My other theory is that GPU and USB send data to the cpu on the same data lanes and they get overloaded? Although i have to admit i dont know anything about computers other than some smart sounding words i heard on LTT videos.

I know we've talked about screen resolution and refresh frequency, however we couldn't find common ground, some were on 1440p, others 1080p, some at 165hz, 144hz, others at 60 or 75hz.

As I've mentioned in one of my 1st post, I first thought it was linked to my 1440p 165hz 32" monitor, however I tried on my 2560 x 1080p, 75hz 34" ultrawide, and it was still crashing (plus I was running at 60hz, I found out it was able to hit 75hz while researching the issue)

Plus, with my new video card, I really don't think the FXAA or frame limit would matter.

But 1 thing sticks out in what you said.

The CPU manages some of the USB ports, but also the PCIe lanes.

Maybe there's a fault with Ryzen CPUs when they have too much data coming in at the same time, like a game or video presentation, with high image load and in/out sound?

Maybe it's also linked with a Windows update, since ppl said it occurs more frequently since october?

Or it can be linked to a Chipset update plus a Windows update?

That's why I'd really like an expert's opinion; I'm willing to test more on my side, but some guidance would help...
