Display driver amdkmdag stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

I've been having crash issues for months now with no solution. I've been able to narrow it down to a windows issue but no solution seems to be available.

At random points during gaming (COD Warzone) the video card driver stops working and then immediately recovers. I get a black screen for around 5-10 seconds and that causes my game to crash. It is extremely frustrating.

I have done clean installs of Windows 10 64bit, tested with both NVidia and AMD GPU's, various video card drivers (up to 1 year old), and various other checks and setting changes.

I'm hoping that someone can please respond to help me figure out what is causing this issue because it is extremely frustrating.

Thank you,

Gregg

Hey everyone,

I have finally fixed this issue fixed on my PC. I'm so damn happy 😅

Changing my input from DisplayPort to HDMI resolved it. This fixes the crashing completely, even with two sticks of memory in dual-channel mode at full speed 3200Mhz.

This got me curious, since I saw that using HDMI limits my refresh rate to 100Hz. So, I switched back to DisplayPort but forced it to run at 120Hz instead of the full 144Hz. This also runs flawlessly with dual-channel memory and IMO confirms that 144Hz (combined with certain memory configurations) is somehow the causing the crashes.

I've ordered a new DisplayPort cable to see if it resolves the issue at 144Hz, but even if it doesn't I'll be happy with 120Hz since the 5600XT rarely gets above 120 FPS in games I play at 1440p anyway!

I hope this helps some of you.

EDIT: Sorry to hear about your new issue Tyler. I am on the latest Window 10 update and AMD drivers (I now have the full AMD Overlay etc installed) and have not run into that problem.

EDIT 2: New DisplayPort cable has the exact same issue at 144Hz. I can live with 120Hz so it's all good and no more crashes :)

EDIT 3: I other solutions posted online to get 144Hz working. Summary is here: https://evanshortiss.com/amd-driver-memory-lock-timeout

True; if the AMD chipset indeed is at fault for crashes linked to quantity and/or type and/or positioning of USB devices plugged in, we must contact them.

However, at this point, I would like a Microsoft employee/moderator weighing in here.

People have been guessing, testing, and reporting issues here since October, and in the past weeks we've been posting multiple messages a day with new findings and maybe even a cause for the issue, and yet we haven't had any official feedback from Microsoft.

At least if someone more knowledgeable than us (well, more than me at least) could point us to a ressource to contact, or even take the problem in charge...

And to anyone new here, or any Microsoft employee reading: What we know so far:

Games crash out of nowhere. Sometimes in the menus, sometimes while playing; it's not linked to action.

*EDIT* 2 others are having crashes in "Teams", usually when sharing documents.

It's not linked to overclocking nor heat.

Most of us get a black screen, with audio still on, then a crash to desktop.

Error is whether "Display driver amdkmdag stopped responding and has successfully recovered." or "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered."

Sometimes crashes are worst and we have a complete freeze and/or GPU driver timeout and we have to reboot.

So it's not linked to GPU brand: BOTH NVIDIA AND AMD ARE CRASHING!

Fresh drivers installs (DDU) and even clean Windows installation won't fix the problem.

I also believe most, if not all of us are on Ryzen CPUs with AMD chipset.

After testing, some of us found that it COULD be linked to USB devices. I haven't experienced any crashes with only keyboard/mouse/headset plugged in, but once I've added 1-2 more, crashes are back.

Port location needs more testing, at the moment I have added another USB device in a rear port and, after crashing, I moved my headset to the front panel USB, no crash after 2 hours of gaming. I'll test more tonight.

An official input would be very much welcome.

Hey, and don't forget: my crashes (and someone else whom reported before me) were just like you described, but happened on Teams, in my case several times while sharing a PowerPoint presentation.

I'm not sure how long do I experience amdkmdag crashes. It might be even more than a year. It used to happen randomly. Almost never in a game (but I don't play recent games much), mostly while working in Fusion 360. It happened from time to time, but not daily. Since December the pattern changed - now I have this crash every single time, usually few minutes after boot, mostly after I open few tabs Firefox, for example. Then freeze for few seconds, monitors go off and on again. You all know it. Funny thing is, that since December I also hear loud "click" sound in my main 24" display during the crash, which I didn't hear before, in the "period of random crashes".

Often, after the crash, I have to manually relaunch Logitech Options, because remapped buttons on my mouse stop working. Every time, when I turn off my computer, and there was this crash during my work on it, I got a warning message "Hidden Windows: LogiOverlay.exe

    • application error", with exception code 0xe0434352. That's quite annoying, because I have to manually close this message, and then the PC will finally turn off. I don't know if this Logitech software might be somehow involved in those crashes, or it is just a victim of it.
