Display driver amdkmdag stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

I've been having crash issues for months now with no solution. I've been able to narrow it down to a windows issue but no solution seems to be available.

At random points during gaming (COD Warzone) the video card driver stops working and then immediately recovers. I get a black screen for around 5-10 seconds and that causes my game to crash. It is extremely frustrating.

I have done clean installs of Windows 10 64bit, tested with both NVidia and AMD GPU's, various video card drivers (up to 1 year old), and various other checks and setting changes.

I'm hoping that someone can please respond to help me figure out what is causing this issue because it is extremely frustrating.

Thank you,

Gregg

Hey everyone,

I have finally fixed this issue fixed on my PC. I'm so damn happy 😅

Changing my input from DisplayPort to HDMI resolved it. This fixes the crashing completely, even with two sticks of memory in dual-channel mode at full speed 3200Mhz.

This got me curious, since I saw that using HDMI limits my refresh rate to 100Hz. So, I switched back to DisplayPort but forced it to run at 120Hz instead of the full 144Hz. This also runs flawlessly with dual-channel memory and IMO confirms that 144Hz (combined with certain memory configurations) is somehow the causing the crashes.

I've ordered a new DisplayPort cable to see if it resolves the issue at 144Hz, but even if it doesn't I'll be happy with 120Hz since the 5600XT rarely gets above 120 FPS in games I play at 1440p anyway!

I hope this helps some of you.

EDIT: Sorry to hear about your new issue Tyler. I am on the latest Window 10 update and AMD drivers (I now have the full AMD Overlay etc installed) and have not run into that problem.

EDIT 2: New DisplayPort cable has the exact same issue at 144Hz. I can live with 120Hz so it's all good and no more crashes :)

EDIT 3: I other solutions posted online to get 144Hz working. Summary is here: https://evanshortiss.com/amd-driver-memory-lock-timeout

    Hi there,

I have tried that repair and it hasn't done the trick. This is a desktop.

    MOBO: ASUS Z170-A

    RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengence 3200MHz

    CPU: i5-6600k (default clock settings)

GPU: AMD RX 5600 XT (I've also tried with NVidia GTX 2060 Super

    PSU: TX750 Corsair 80 Bronze

At the time that my games crash I get 2 warnings from the 'Display' that state the subject of this thread. 1 Warning DistributedCOM. There are no errors registered in the Event viewer at the time of the game crashes.

Let me know if you would like me to send through any of those files - happy to do so.

Just had another crash and noticed in the Event Viewer under Application there's a windows error reporting

Did you try to please repair system files by

    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

command from Windows PowerShell (administrator) environment?

    Is this desktop or laptop?

Please check system journal (Event Viewer) for possible errors at these moments, especially Kernel-Power errors. DistributedCOM errors should be ignored.

Or save system journal to evtx file and share it to OneDrive for analysis.

    Hi there,

Yes, I have cleaned out my heatsink and computer in general is very clean - minimal dust. The gpu is 3 months old so still very clean and I inspected it and nothing is physically damaged. I have also tested with another brand new gpu and same issue (one was amd and one was nvidia). I have run stress tests and the temps don't go very high at all so that doesn't appear to be an issue.

    Hi Gregg,

I'm Independent Advisor not Microsoft employee or support person. But I'm in contact with Windows developers since 1995 - as a one of the best Windows beta-testers till 2009 when program was closed, as an MVP in 2005-2017 including Windows System & Performance nomination. So I have deep enough Windows knowledge and you may trust me. It's a pleasure for me to help others and I'll do all my best to help you.

Did you try to clean GPU cooling system (or laptop internal cooling system) from dust?
