Display driver amdkmdag stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

I've been having crash issues for months now with no solution. I've been able to narrow it down to a windows issue but no solution seems to be available.

At random points during gaming (COD Warzone) the video card driver stops working and then immediately recovers. I get a black screen for around 5-10 seconds and that causes my game to crash. It is extremely frustrating.

I have done clean installs of Windows 10 64bit, tested with both NVidia and AMD GPU's, various video card drivers (up to 1 year old), and various other checks and setting changes.

I'm hoping that someone can please respond to help me figure out what is causing this issue because it is extremely frustrating.

Thank you,

Gregg

Hey everyone,

I have finally fixed this issue fixed on my PC. I'm so damn happy 😅

Changing my input from DisplayPort to HDMI resolved it. This fixes the crashing completely, even with two sticks of memory in dual-channel mode at full speed 3200Mhz.

This got me curious, since I saw that using HDMI limits my refresh rate to 100Hz. So, I switched back to DisplayPort but forced it to run at 120Hz instead of the full 144Hz. This also runs flawlessly with dual-channel memory and IMO confirms that 144Hz (combined with certain memory configurations) is somehow the causing the crashes.

I've ordered a new DisplayPort cable to see if it resolves the issue at 144Hz, but even if it doesn't I'll be happy with 120Hz since the 5600XT rarely gets above 120 FPS in games I play at 1440p anyway!

I hope this helps some of you.

EDIT: Sorry to hear about your new issue Tyler. I am on the latest Window 10 update and AMD drivers (I now have the full AMD Overlay etc installed) and have not run into that problem.

EDIT 2: New DisplayPort cable has the exact same issue at 144Hz. I can live with 120Hz so it's all good and no more crashes :)

EDIT 3: I other solutions posted online to get 144Hz working. Summary is here: https://evanshortiss.com/amd-driver-memory-lock-timeout

It's certainly frustrating. See this link (https://wccftech.com/amd-ryzen-5000-zen-3-desktop-cpus-x570-motherboards-high-failure-rates/) for info about the USB theory. It could be valid for certain people using X570 and Ryzen 5000!

The saddest thing with this error message is that it seems to be linked with various problems.

Some seem to be memory linked, others an overheating issue or even a total gpu failure. On my side of seems to be USB related, since I still have crashes with an Nvidia card...

Hard to find a fix when there 3-4 different problems with the same crash message.

(By the way, I haven't tested much since installing my 3080. I found a safe USB layout that doesn't crash and kept it that way since.

I don't know if it's chipset linked, or something with the processor. Don't know if it's hardware or if a software update can fix it.

I suspect it could be linked to my new x570 motherboard since I wasn't having as many crashes with my older board, and my kid's computer runs fine with my old card, mobo and processor)

Glad you tracked it down, and best of luck with an RMA.

My card has been rock solid after reseating the RAM and removing the GPU support. Crazy to think it was some minor bad contact causing it.

I’m no longer using AMD's Radeon Software either. I DDI'd and just installed the newer driver directly via device manager. It feels like my FreeSync is working better since.

Update - I had no crashes for a week after doing the above steps, but then they started again. It then got even worse to the point where the system would crash in the middle of windows loading, then even during the power up/BIOS phase to the point where I couldn't even see BIOS, although I could see the HD working as if it were booting. I then went though changing up every component in my system one step at a time - swapped the motherboard, ram, cpu, graphics card - eventually found that the graphics card was the culprit. System would boot up fine with my older GT 730 card, but not my newer ASRock RX570 card. The system's been completely stable with the old GT730 card for several weeks now.

So now I see that it had to have been the graphics card all along, just steadily getting worse over time. I will attempt to get it fixed through ASRock as it is within a year of purchase and will hopefully be fixable under warranty.
