Display driver amdkmdag stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

I've been having crash issues for months now with no solution. I've been able to narrow it down to a windows issue but no solution seems to be available.

At random points during gaming (COD Warzone) the video card driver stops working and then immediately recovers. I get a black screen for around 5-10 seconds and that causes my game to crash. It is extremely frustrating.

I have done clean installs of Windows 10 64bit, tested with both NVidia and AMD GPU's, various video card drivers (up to 1 year old), and various other checks and setting changes.

I'm hoping that someone can please respond to help me figure out what is causing this issue because it is extremely frustrating.

Thank you,

Gregg

Hey everyone,

I have finally fixed this issue fixed on my PC. I'm so damn happy 😅

Changing my input from DisplayPort to HDMI resolved it. This fixes the crashing completely, even with two sticks of memory in dual-channel mode at full speed 3200Mhz.

This got me curious, since I saw that using HDMI limits my refresh rate to 100Hz. So, I switched back to DisplayPort but forced it to run at 120Hz instead of the full 144Hz. This also runs flawlessly with dual-channel memory and IMO confirms that 144Hz (combined with certain memory configurations) is somehow the causing the crashes.

I've ordered a new DisplayPort cable to see if it resolves the issue at 144Hz, but even if it doesn't I'll be happy with 120Hz since the 5600XT rarely gets above 120 FPS in games I play at 1440p anyway!

I hope this helps some of you.

EDIT: Sorry to hear about your new issue Tyler. I am on the latest Window 10 update and AMD drivers (I now have the full AMD Overlay etc installed) and have not run into that problem.

EDIT 2: New DisplayPort cable has the exact same issue at 144Hz. I can live with 120Hz so it's all good and no more crashes :)

EDIT 3: I other solutions posted online to get 144Hz working. Summary is here: https://evanshortiss.com/amd-driver-memory-lock-timeout

I don't have any RGB peripheral, though I have most of my USB ports populated with some devices. I also have USB TV tuner, which is not working quite correctly. Sometimes the TV app acts like if the stick wasn't plugged in at all, and I have to reconnect it. And sometimes it works without  any issues for few days in a row.

I'm really starting to think port location/chipset used has something to do with the issue.

Those who crashes with only mouse and keyboard, try other ports just to see.

Yesterday I've had another crash free gaming night, again with my headset plugged in the front panel, so managed by the motherboard.

But when I plug it back behind, I get crashes within 2-3 minutes.

There's probably a conflict or overload somewhere when we have too many USB devices plugged in.

Question to everyone here: Do you all have RGB peripherals?

If so, maybe the In/Out of information has a role in all this.

Usually a mouse and keyboard is 1 way, but with RGB it sends info back to light up everything according to different patterns.

Just throwing the theory out there, I don't think it really is the problem, but I don't want to rule out anything at this point...

So maybe it is something with that data lane thing i said? Apex is a good looking game, but i guess since it's a kind of e-sports title it doesnt use as much gpu as Far Cry and Flight Sim. Maybe the data lanes or however i should call it get overloaded and it causes crashing. But then, do USB ports and PCI add-on cards use the same lanes to communicate with the CPU? I'm really confused now.

At this point I'm not sure what's going on. I thought it was the USB theory, but it seems to be linked to certain games for me too.

    1. Far Cry 5 crashes, usually with terrible artefacts. It only happens if it's the first game I play on the first boot of the PC for that day. This happens with just a mouse and keyboard plugged in. The crash usually results in "driver timeout".
    2. Flight Simulator is similar to Far Cry, but doesn't show any artefacts. It simply freezes, then goes to the "driver timeout". Sometimes this game will crash a second time.
    3. Apex Legends doesn't seem to crash with just mouse and keyboard. I'll test it with more USB accessories and report back.
